ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel welcomed the cast of Pod Save America to his Tuesday show where the trio of former Obama aides urged the audience to devote themselves to progressive causes, Democratic Party activism, and to buy their new book Democracy or Else: How to Save America in 10 Easy Steps which won’t release for another seven months. Speechwriter Jon Lovett admitted he wasn’t thrilled with the idea that 2024 will likely be the election of “warring angry grandpas,” but urged people to get over it because one doesn’t care if you die.
Lovett explained, “Look, you may not be totally happy with the fact that we live in a country in which we basically have warring angry grandpas all the time. It's a battle between angry grandpas and they have some things in common. If you ask them what LGBTQ stood for and they got two right, you'd call it a win, but, and like, that's-- I wish it were a nation governed by grandpas. They need their rest, but that's the world we have.”
Returning to earlier themes that Kimmel’s liberal audience could understand, “And so, ultimately, if nothing changes, we're going to end up having to choose between these two grandpas. And they have a lot in common, but they have big difference, Joe Biden, as a grandpa, believes in abortion rights, raising the minimum wage, he believes in unions—”
Fellow H-less Jon and speechwriter Jon Favreau jumped into add, “Democracy.” Lovett added that to the list and kept going, “Democracy, believes in expanding health care. So, you have one grandpa that believes in those things and you have one grandpa who's slightly different in that he doesn't care if we live or die and that's a distinction and you decide which of those two grandpas you would rather spend the holidays with.”
Obviously, the grandpa Lovett is referring to is Donald Trump, but Republicans could nominate somebody who isn’t a grandpa and he would be saying the exact same thing: anybody who opposes socialist health care doesn’t care if people die.
As for Kimmel, he was all for it, “Well, I think that's a very reasonable way of looking at it. Well, it's great to have you guys here. The podcast is great and I highly recommend it.”
It was not “very reasonable.”
