GOP Rep. Vicky Hartzler opposed Congress’s same-sex marriage bill which led ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel to attack her looks on Thursday, specifically claiming she looks like a lesbian, while also telling to “get over” her religious beliefs.
Kimmel introduced a clip of Hartzler on the House floor by reporting, “So, every Democrat and 39 Republicans voted in favor of the bill. One Republican who voted nay on gay was Vicky Hartzler of Missouri, who gave an impassioned plea warning us that this bill has us headed down the road to damnation.”
The video showed a tearful Hartzler proclaiming, “Well, Mr. Speaker, I’ll tell you my priority. Protect religious liberty. Protect people of faith and protect Americans who believe in the true meaning of marriage. I hope and pray that my colleagues will find the courage to join me in opposing this misguided and this dangerous bill. I yield back.”
Kimmel’s reaction was to make things bitterly personal, “So wait, that woman's not a lesbian? I mean, her mouth may be saying ‘Unhinged bigot’ but her haircut says ‘meet my partner Bev.’ And that jacket, it's like, what if --what if--The Fonz was a middle-aged woman living in Palm Springs?’”
The studio audience naturally thought this was among the funniest things they’ve ever heard, but it just shows that those on the left thinks attacking women’s looks is okay so long as the woman is a conservative.
Kimmel then put up Hartzler’s official Congressional photo of her wearing a similar jacket, “This-- I looked her up. Vicky Hartzler, she loves a pleather jacket. This is her official Congress photo. Which I-- didn't Dustin Hoffman wear this in Tootsie? And what's on that pin she's wearing? Can we zoom in on that? Oh my gosh, Well.”
The pin, which was actually Photoshopped, read “Lilith Fair: A Celebration of Women in Music.” In the actual photo, it is a standard Congressional lapel pin.
Moving on from physical appearance to religion, Kimmel added, “Hey listen, we get it Vicky, you grew up in a religious family. Get over it. If Jesus was anti-lesbian, he wouldn't wear sandals, okay.”
