Fresh off his Wednesday morning “reality check” where he claimed that pro-lifers hate, CNN senior political analyst traveled over to Don Lemon Tonight to accuse them of putting “party over country” if they still support Herschel Walker in lieu of the allegations he paid a former girlfriend to have an abortion. For his part, Lemon declared it “sad” Republicans just want to take the Senate.
Avlon was discussing the latest reporting on the controversy, which is that the woman claims to be the mother to one of Walker’s children, when he declared, “Again, the question will be for the voters of Georgia, for Republican voters in Georgia, people, voters who are voters of faith in Georgia, if this isn't too much, what is? Does character count? Or is it just party over country, party over character.”
Given his earlier ramblings against pro-lifers, Avlon’s lamentations about conservatives putting “party over country” is impossible to take seriously. Still, Lemon displayed a great amount of faux solemnity as he followed up, “Well, it's really about power because people say they don't care, really care—”
As Avlon interjected to agree, “that’s it,” Lemon continued, “if he paid for an abortion or not, or whatever he did. And some of them even calling the woman a derogatory name. They just care about control of the Senate, which is sad.”
While Don Lemon and John Avlon don’t care about who controls the Senate? As absurd as that claim would be, Avlon still tried to make it, “You know, again, it's about the character of the people you send to the Senate. And again, I mean, he's running against an actual reverend, you know, who sits and preaches from Martin Luther King's pulpit.”
Not only does Raphael Warnock use King as a shield against criticism of his left-wing policies, including support for abortion, he does the same with his role as a pastor, which pro-lifers also view as a serious character flaw. Then there the allegations from Warnock’s ex-wife that he ran over her foot with his car, that his church camps were rife with abuse, and questions about tax avoidance.
But, if you were to watch CNN, you would think the biggest scandal involving Warnock is whether or not he owns a dog as Lemon presented the choice between Warnock and Walker as self-evident, “If you are a Christian, if you're an Evangelical, who are you going -- a reverend or –“
Avlon then interrupted to add, “Well, what we've been hearing, at least until this revelation, is that you and I know many of our Republican friends have been saying, ‘so what? At the end of the day, I want the vote. I want control of the Senate and that matters to me more.’ But we've not seen the kind of shambolic and incoherent, I mean, amoral lying and erasure of this woman, in addition to the hypocrisy about abortion.”
Lemon then finished his thought, “or a hypocrite,” but if he really cared about character, then he would also be condemning Democrats for nominating someone like Warnock.
