The Cancel Mob Comes For Goya Foods (Again)

July 10th, 2020 10:10 AM

In what is proof evident of the left’s continuous effort to shove ethnic minorities into an ideological box, the cancel mob has now come for Goya Foods after CEO Bob Unanue dared to say something supportive of President Donald Trump.

What did Unanue say at President Trump's signing of the Executive Order creating the White House Hispanic Prosperity Initiative that was so offensive as to unleash the social media horde? Both the mob and the activist media that enable them cite the end of Unanue’s remarks, where he said:

...by the way, we are all truly blessed at the same time to have a leader like President Trump, who is a builder. And that’s what my grandfather did. He came to this country- to build, to grow, to prosper. And so we have an incredible builder, and we pray. We pray for our leadership, for our President, and we pray for our country- that we will continue to prosper and to grow.

But look at the full context of those remarks, at what is left out of media reports, and at what truly enraged the mob:

BOB UNANUE, CEO, GOYA FOODS: Good afternoon, Mr. President, good afternoon everyone. It’s such an honor and such a blessing to be here in the greatest country in the world, the most prosperous country in the world, and we continue to grow. And that’s what we are here to do today.

Our company was founded in 1936 by my grandfather who left Spain at only 18 years old. He did not know where he was heading, but he was heading and looking for opportunity and prosperity. And he found it in this great country. Today, our company is a multibillion-dollar company with thousands of employees, and with facilities all around the globe. We have a tremendous group of what we call “La Gran Familia Goya”, the Goya Family- the great Goya Family. And these are people- I told the President earlier- “we haven’t gone back to work, we never stopped working”. Because when I asked our group, our family, “this is going to be a tough thing”. They said, “look, Bob, if we don't do it, nobody will.” And they stood up and they worked and continue to work day and night to provide much-needed food and nutrition to this country.

Today, it gives me great honor- and by the way, we are all truly blessed at the same time to have a leader like President Trump, who is a builder. And that’s what my grandfather did. He came to this country- to build, to grow, to prosper. And so we have an incredible builder, and we pray. We pray for our leadership, for our President, and we pray for our country- that we will continue to prosper and to grow.

More so than Unanue’s words of support for President Trump, it was his telling of an immigrant success story that did not appeal to racial grievance, and his framing of America as the greatest country in the world. The identitarian mob that seeks to erase not just America’s founding but America itself came unglued at the idea that someone of Hispanic descent would dare step outside of the ideological “brown box”, and commit such blasphemies against identitarian orthodoxy. How dare Unanue present himself as something other than a Latinx victim in need of community organizing and paternalistic government?

But unbeknownst to these newly-minted amateur adobo alchemists, this is not Goya’s first cancel rodeo.

In 2017 the New York City Puerto Rican Day Parade, spurred by New York City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito among others, made the catastrophic decision to honor convicted FALN terrorist Oscar López-Rivera as a “National Liberation Hero”. Goya Foods was, at that time, the event’s most prominent sponsor, but withdrew support for the event once it lent itself to become a platform for terrorist support. Goya’s withdrawal opened the door for other sponsors to withdraw, such as JetBlue, AT&T, Corona beer, the New York Yankees, Coca-Cola, and even Univision. This was Goya's original sin, more so than some kind words uttered at a President just before signing an executive order that significantly empowers the Hispanic community.

Predictably, the activist media has provided coverage most favorable to the mob. Take, for example, CNN’s report casting AOC and failed presidential candidate Julián Castro as representative of the entire Hispanic community (they’re not).

Then, as they do today, the censorious mob sought to cancel Goya Foods. They will fail today, just as they did 3 years ago.

This doomed-to-fail effort to censor independent thought is brought to you by... Goya Foods.
