Trump returned to Facebook and YouTube Friday after both platforms recently lifted their bans.
“I’M BACK!” read Trump’s first post-ban Facebook post and the title of his new YouTube video. Both posts included a video of Trump just after he won the 2016 election. “Sorry to keep you waiting,” he said, “complicated business, complicated.”
This comes just after YouTube restored the former president’s account Friday morning and Meta restored his Facebook and Instagram accounts last month. The three platforms along with Twitter and numerous others banned the former president after the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot.
Although he’s back, the platforms have a lot of work to do if they want to restore the trust of those who value free speech. “Yes, he’s back,” stated MRC Free Speech America & MRC Business Director Michael Morris, “but the leaders of Big Tech companies have given lip service to the notion of supporting free speech in the past. Trump’s removal and 5,100-plus documented cases of censorship recorded in MRC Free Speech America’s CensorTrack.org database show these previous commitments to America’s first principles were a farce."
He added, “will Big Tech companies allow the former president and 2024 presidential hopeful to speak freely on their platforms going forward? Only time will tell.”
