A group of celebrities and activists called for Big Tech companies to crack down on supposed “anti-LGBTQ extremist hate” and censor constitutionally protected speech.
GLAAD and the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) published a letter to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew, YouTube CEO Neal Mohan, Twitter owner Elon Musk, and Twitter CEO Linda Yaccarino. It was signed by more than 250 individuals, demanding more censorship on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Twitter, and TikTok.
The June 27 letter made a wild allegation that so-called “disinformation and hate” leads to “violence” against LGBTQ Americans, though without providing a single concrete example to illustrate.
Big Tech platforms like Facebook and Twitter are notorious for labeling statements of biological facts or posts exposing the harmful effects of LGBTQ ideology (especially on children) as “hate speech.” The LGBTQ activists insisted to the Big Tech CEOS on increased “mitigations” and “not allow[ing] hate speech” on social media.
“As celebrities, influencers, and prominent public figures with significant followings on social media, we the undersigned are calling on Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, TikTok, and Twitter to fulfill the promises you’ve made to transgender, nonbinary, gender non-conforming and all LGBTQ users in your terms of service,” the hyperbolic letter began. “There has been a massive systemic failure to prohibit hate, harassment, and malicious anti-LGBTQ disinformation on your platforms and it must be addressed.”
Ironically, the letter went on to ask the companies to protect LGBTQ groups from censorship while also asking them to censor those who support traditional marriage and believe in two biological sexes. “Your policies and corresponding enforcement are inadequate when it comes to mitigating harmful and dangerous anti-LGBTQ content,” the letter reads, asking for more censorship. The letter, however, immediately made clear that LGBTQ users do not want a taste of their own medicine. “You must urgently take action to protect trans and LGBTQ users on your platforms (including protecting us from over-enforcement and censorship).”
Famous letter signers included singer and actress Demi Lovato, singer Ariana Grande, “transgender” influencer Dylan Mulvaney, actress Jamie Lee Curtis, “transgender” celebrity Elliot Page, and comedienne Chelsea Handler.
