The anti-free speech United Nations just came out with an extensive report pushing for action—ie censorship—from Big Tech and governments on “disinformation” and “hate speech.”
UN Secretary-General António Guterres announced on June 12 a dubious report allegedly designed toward forcing “information integrity” for Big Tech platforms. “Alarm over generative AI, as relevant as it is, must not obscure damage being done by digital tech enabling the spread of hate speech, mis- & disinformation now,” Guterres pontificated in a tweet announcing the report. Even a brief look at the UN report shows a disturbing push for private and public entities, including Big Tech, to suppress any content deemed “disinformation.” The report even claimed this alleged disinformation “poses an existential risk to humanity.”
The report does not address how Big Tech has repeatedly censored truth and facts as “disinformation” for undermining certain narratives. Instead, it scaremongered about supposedly harmful speech. According to the 29-page anti-free speech report, digital “platforms have also exposed a darker side of the digital ecosystem,” allegedly enabling “the rapid spread of lies and hate, causing real harm on a global scale.” The UN intoned, “mis- and disinformation and hate speech have surged.”
The UN proposed “scaled-up responses” among its draconian solutions, including more “fact checking” and “mitigation strategies” to suppress free speech. The report further advised artificial intelligence (AI) tools for content moderation and measures to prevent some speech or “stronger disincentives.” Recommendations were made to “Member States,” media and tech platforms.
The globalist UN has plenty of suggestions—and prophecies of catastrophe if they’re not followed. It announced, “The danger cannot be overstated. Social media-enabled hate speech and disinformation can lead to violence and death.”
This alleged disinformation “endangers democratic institutions and fundamental human rights,” the UN fearmongered. “Across the world, the United Nations is monitoring how mis- and disinformation and hate speech can threaten progress towards the” authoritarian, woke Sustainable Development Goals, that promote environmental, social, and governance (ESG) standards.
The report goes on to complain about insufficient content “moderation,” ie censorship, on platforms. Tech platforms must “invest” in more censorship—ahem, “content moderation”—according to the UN.
Unfortunately, this is hardly the UN’s first time endorsing censorship. UN chief Guterres previously claimed fighting misinformation is “a matter of life and death” in July 2022. He also called for a crackdown on “disinformation” in November 2022.
