The West is at “war.” At least, that’s how liberal journalist Glenn Greenwald described the tumultuous battle raging online that could determine whether or not the internet will be free.
Liberal journalist Glenn Greenwald slammed media and private companies’ aligned with Democrats to silence speech as a censorship “industry” in a long tweet thread Tuesday. In the thread, he also tweeted, "It's not melodrama or hyperbole to say: what we have is a war in the West, a war over whether the internet will be free.”
Greenwald proffered advice for how to combat the “new industry” bent on silencing dissent. “There's now an entire new industry, aligned with Dems, to pressure Big Tech to censor,” he tweeted. “Support outlets and platforms that want to protect free inquiry and the right of dissent, not rob you of it.”
Greenwald’s tweets come amid revelations of several instances of alleged coordination between the federal government and Big Tech to censor online speech over the last several years.
"As I've often said, the media outlets screaming most loudly about "disinformation" are the ones that spread it most frequently, casually and destructively," Greenwald tweeted.
"A series of ‘crises’ have been cynically and aggressively exploited to inexorably restrict the range of permitted views, and expand pretexts for online silencing and deplatforming,” Greenwald posted. He cited Donald Trump's election, Russiagate, the events of Jan. 6, 2021, COVID-19 and the war in Ukraine, as instances used to implement new “methods of repression.”
Greenwald slammed the pro-censorship stance of the modern Democratic Party. “Dems routinely abuse their majoritarian power in DC to explicitly coerce Big Tech silencing of their opponents and dissent. This is *Govt censorship* disguised as corporate autonomy," he insisted.
The journalist noted that tech companies are not censoring purely of their own choice. “A major myth that must be quickly dismantled: political censorship is not the by-product of autonomous choices of Big Tech companies,” Greewald wrote. “This is happening because DC Dems and the US Security State are threatening reprisals if they refuse.”
The journalist then took aim at leftist megadonors and their fact-checking armies.
“Think tanks and self-proclaimed ‘disinformation experts’ funded by Omidyar, Soros and the US/UK Security State use benign-sounding names to glorify ideological censorship as neutral expertise," he tweeted.
He ended by explicitly encouraging Americans to call out journalists who push censorship.
"Heap scorn on the corporate outlets and their deceitful, pro-censorship employees abusing the ‘journalist’ label,” Greenwald tweeted. “Read them with full skepticism, or just ignore them. Support outlets and platforms that want to protect free inquiry and the right of dissent, not rob you of it."
Previously, Greenwald said in a July Twitter discussion with Tesla CEO Elon Musk that congressional Democrats this year have “made more explicit” their threats to Big Tech platforms that they will take action if the platforms do not adhere to the censorship demands.” Greenwald also joined pro-free speech video platform Rumble in August 2021.
