Too typically, the cover of Seventeen magazine for February features former Nickeolodeon star Victoria Justice and “The Edgy Side You’ve Never Seen (Until Now).” The teen stars always have to “mature” into “edgy,” and in this case, it’s a “daring role on the gritty new MTV series Eye Candy.”
Justice will play “a computer hacker who gets caught up with a serial killer.” She explained “It’s a very sexy thriller-drama.” Sexy serial-killer drama? That’s edgy, all right -- and perfect viewing for high schoolers? “Victorious [her Nick show] was musical singing, happy times, and colorful, and this show is the polar opposite, which is 100 percent why I was drawn to it.” It’s making her channel her inner “badass.”
The 21-year-old actress still gets upset over a social-media misunderstanding where people believe she had bullied her co-star Ariana Grande – now one of the hottest pop singers. “Even though she said it wasn’t true, our fans still believed that I had bullied her, and that really bothered me. I’m super anti-bullying, and I’ve never bullied anyone in my life. I want people to know that.”
“Super anti-bullying” is exactly what a Hollywood vet would call themselves these days, as if you have to add the “super.”
The article ended with a sliver of a notion that Eastern religious notions that turn the celebrity into loving themselves more deeply is a “very spiritual” and also very Hollywood:
I believe in reading self-help and inspirational books – on my nightstand are The Alchemist, Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff, and Deepak Chopra’s The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success. I’m also a very spiritual person, and I strongly believe in the power of meditation and the fact that you can change your own mind. Sometimes if you get to a certain level of meditation and you can tap into your subconscious, you can attract amazing things into your life. It’s all about self-love, being your own best friend, and enjoying your own company. Once you have that, the world is your oyster.
