Jaime Fuller at The Washington Post mocked the Charlotte Observer’s surprisingly weak endorsement of Sen. Kay Hagan. The Post called it Hagan’s “worst endorsement.” That seems right.
“Here is a sample of the glowing things they had to say about her,” Fuller cracked:
– "Kay Hagan has been a disappointment"
– “She has done about the minimum you'd expect from a U.S. senator, with few if any notable legislative achievements."
– “She has a chronic reluctance to take firm positions on controversial issues"
– "...she needs to accept that while North Carolina is a difficult, divided state to represent, it deserves a senator who is not perpetually fearful of upsetting half the state’s voting population."
The Observer ends the endorsement by noting the state needs a leader and that they "recommend voters give her another chance to show she is up to it."
But they loathe Republican nominee Thom Tillis, who is slammed with all the usual liberal talking points. "He harshly cut off long-term employment benefits...He proudly rejected a federal Medicaid expansion....He irresponsibly pushed through significant tax cuts that mostly benefit corporations and the wealthy....He attempted to defund Planned Parenthood, which provides critical health screenings to women, as well as education that helps prevent unwanted pregnancies.”
From their liberal perch, Hagan is a moderate: “As a senator who’s more moderate than most, Hagan has an opportunity with other moderates to bridge the gap between Democrats and Republicans at a time when Washington needs that badly.” But her American Conservative Union lifetime score is 10.6 percent, and she’s a perfect 100 for abortion for NARAL Pro-Choice America.
