An NBC producer is sure going to have some splainin’ to do after the production gaffe that occurred during Thursday’s coverage of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.
With Today cooking expert Sandra Lee on screen waving to the crowd aboard the Tom Turkey float, Matt Lauer said, “With its wings flappin', eyes rollin', and head bobbin', this old bird is grateful to be 'The one that got away'” (video follows with transcript and commentary):
SAVANNAH GUTHRIE, CO-HOST: And true to tradition, here comes the parade's first course, the Tom Turkey float. Adding to the trimmings is the editor-in-chief of the Sandra Lee magazine and member of the Today show family, celebrity home and cooking expert, Sandra Lee.
And while you stuff that turkey, we'll tell you some stuff about turkeys. It's estimated that 45 million of them will be gobbled up today. Do you know that is one-sixth of all turkeys sold in the U.S. each year?
MATT LAUER, CO-HOST (WITH SANDRA LEE ON-SCREEN WAVING TO THE CROWD): And with its wings flappin', eyes rollin', and head bobbin', this old bird is grateful to be "The one that got away."
Oops! Some producer wasn't paying attention.
Post facto opining: Might this have been a Freudian slip by Lauer or even intentional?
For those that aren't aware, Lee is New York governor Andrew Cuomo's live-in partner.
Also, last month while echoing Miley Cyrus, Lee joked about Lauer not being someone that should be considered for the leading role in the upcoming film version of "50 Shades of Grey."
Makes "The one that got away" line a little funnier, doesn't it?
