In February 2012, NewsBusters reported Bill Maher contributed $1 million to a Super PAC devoted to getting Barack Obama reelected.
On HBO's Real Time Friday, Maher said, "I’m giving away all of my money – not to Obama this time though" (video follows with transcript and commentary):
BILL MAHER: What do you think about that old lady who won the Powerball lottery? What do you think she should do? I mean, she’s old. She can’t use it. She’s like 84. She won like hundreds of millions.
TOM SHADYAC, AUTHOR: I did not hear about this woman, but we know what lotteries do to most lottery winners, and that’s the same rules of happiness apply.
MAHER: You’re right. That’s a good point. They’re not happy. Sometimes they’re suicidal from it.
SHADYAC: That’s right. It tears families apart. People come in after the wealth, and it’s just pretty much a mess.
MAHER: Hmmm. I’m giving away all of my money – not to Obama this time though.
As NewsBusters reported, Obama on Thursday appears to have lost as supporters the New York Times and Comedy Central's Stephen Colbert.
If he's also lost Maher, it's going to be a long three and a half years.
