Jay Leno on Thursday took a cheap shot at Congresswoman Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.), Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), and former Alaska governor Sarah Palin.
Referring to McCain's admonishment of Bachmann's comments regarding Hillary Clinton aide Huma Abedin, the Tonight Show host quipped, "When the guy who picked Sarah Palin says you are crazy, you are crazy" (video follows with transcribed highlights and commentary):
Early in Leno's opening monologue, he said, "The latest forecast: hot and dry this week with a hundred percent chance of Michele Bachmann making an idiot of herself."
"You know about this?" Leno continued. "Republicans and Democrats in the Senate and House are furious with Congresswoman Michele Bachmann who claimed that Islamists have infiltrated the highest levels of the federal government. She even went so far as to accuse one of Hillary Clinton’s assistants who is of Palestinian heritage but is an American citizen."
"God bless John McCain," said Leno setting up the punch line. "John McCain denounced her as being completely out of line. Let me tell you something: when the guy who picked Sarah Palin says you are crazy, you are crazy."
In all fairness, I in no way support the recent comments by Bachmann.
However, does every inartful remark by a conservative have to lead to an attack on Palin?
Apparently so.
