Thursday’s Morning Joe spent little time on Anthony Fauci’s actual refusal to answer questions at yesterday's Senate committee hearing, and far more time insisting the real COVID villains were Donald Trump and his “spineless minions.”
Joe Scarborough opened with a puerile stunt, pretending he hadn't seen the hearing, but was sure the Republicans had finally admitted that the president had lied to the American people about the seriousness of the pandemic.
Jonathan Lemire and Mika Brzezinski played along with Scarborough's charade, facetiously informing him that “that’s not quite how yesterday played out,” and accusing Joe of poor show prep. The screencap shows a "shocked" Scarborough throwing his papers in the air at the news.
Scarborough's stunt allowed the hosts to pivot immediately to their preferred narrative: Trump was the villain, and Fauci the heroic truth-teller.
Scarborough then declared that Rand Paul had set up the hearing by promising to put Fauci “behind bars,” framing the entire proceeding as a kangaroo court. Because the liberals could never be painted as obsessive people trying to to put Trump "behind bars."
Mika followed with a lengthy monologue painting Fauci as a career public servant under siege from a “political cult.” She accused Republicans of trying “to desperately avert Americans’ eyes from the real perpetrators of COVID lies, President Donald Trump and his spineless minions in Congress.”
Mika went further, faulting Trump for failing to produce “a miracle cure.”

Left unmentioned: Operation Warp Speed, the Trump administration effort that delivered multiple COVID vaccines in record time—something many scientists had considered impossible.
Mika closed by acknowledging that “we still need answers on the origins of this deadly virus,” while ignoring Fauci’s early and repeated public insistence on a natural wet-market origin and the substantial U.S. funding that flowed through his institute to the Wuhan lab’s gain-of-function research.
The segment’s message was clear. The man who took the Fifth more than a hundred times was the responsible scientist, the hero of the story. The real scandal remained Donald Trump’s words and the Republicans’ refusal to focus on them. It was peak MS DNC.

JOE SCARBOROUGH: Oh, you know, I was waiting for this hearing. And Lemire, I’ll tell you why I was waiting for this hearing.
Because I was so excited that the Republicans were finally going to admit that the president that they had been a member of a personality cult with for a decade now, had actually told Bob Woodward that he lied to the American people about the COVID virus.
He knew it was bad, and Rand Paul, of course, heard Donald Trump’s tape with Bob Woodward saying, “Yeah, I lied to the American people. I didn’t tell them how bad it was going to be ’cause I didn’t want to hurt the Dow Jones.”
MIKA: Actually --
SCARBOROUGH: And, and, and, and Jonathan, time and time again, he kept saying, “Oh, it’s just one person from China, it’s gonna go away in January, in February.” He said, “This is nothing, it’ll be gone by April.” On and on and on.

MIKA: I did.
SCARBOROUGH: They, they must have said that, right, Jonathan?
JONATHAN LEMIRE: Joe, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but that’s not quite how yesterday played out. The Republicans --
SCARBOROUGH: What?!
LEMIRE: I know, I know. Check, check your notes.
SCARBOROUGH: That’s shocking.
LEMIRE: I know. This is just poor show prep, I guess. We needed to -- but yeah, this is -- take a look. That’s not what happened. There was none of that. There was no, there was no admission that President Trump knew how bad this was going to be and didn’t tell the American people.
SCARBOROUGH: But they about, they talked about the disinfectants under the skin and the lights under the skin, right? They did bring that up, right? He was doing witchcraft.
LEMIRE: I'm getting, I’m getting in my ear. No, that didn't happen. The part where they didn’t tell the Americans—that didn’t happen either. No, no, it’s, it’s, no, no, no, none of that, none of that happened.
SCARBOROUGH: Well, this is going to be interesting. I bet Mika has something to say about this.
MIKA: I have a full report ahead for you, since you didn’t do your show prep.

Republican Senator Rand Paul says he will call for a vote next week to hold Dr. Anthony Fauci in contempt of Congress.
SCARBOROUGH: What a surprise. So this is the same Rand Paul who's bee saying for years he's going to put Anthony Fauci behind bars. Boy, that was a really good way, as the Wall Street Journal said, to set up that hearing. To say, “Hey, come on in, testify to us, please be open, let us know how you made your decisions, let us know what you think about the lab leak theory.” Let, oh, but by the way, I’m gonna put you behind bars.

MIKA: So let’s do a little recent history lesson. Yesterday’s wretched performance by Senate Republicans was the latest in a long, pathetic attempt by members of a political cult that has spent six years trying to desperately avert Americans’ eyes from the real perpetrators of COVID lies: President Donald Trump and his spineless minions in Congress, some of whom you saw there.
The horrors of Fauci talking to Barbara Streisand, Julia Roberts keeping count of his glowing press accounts, ’cause no one does that, not the president, and using data from the last US global pandemic to guide early decisions, was child’s play compared to the deadly lies coming out of the White House.
President Trump admitted to Bob Woodward on tape that he refused to prepare Americans for the horrors of COVID because he didn’t want to hurt the economy. He withheld that information from the American people.

Trump’s lies continued full force in April, with the flustered president assuring reporters that COVID-19 might not come back at all this fall.
It was Dr. Fauci who once again had to correct the president’s spurious claims and tell Americans the truth about this deadly crisis.
I’d like to point out they had to set up morgues outside New York City hospitals for the Thousands of dead people, and this president is talking about injecting bleach.
Once again, it was Dr. Fauci and Trump’s own administration that had to warn the public against placing any credence in the president’s maniacal screed, ramblings on this. Maniacal!

A year of delusional decisions coming from the White House did not produce a miracle cure. Instead, that, not Anthony Fauci’s good faith efforts to save lives, made Americans more vulnerable to a deadly pandemic and a debilitating financial collapse.
Republicans cherry-picking parts of Fauci’s diaries to pose for cameras while screaming vulgarities at a man who spent a career trying to save American lives show the party to be hypocritical, out of touch, and irredeemable on the subject of COVID, and they know better.
We still need answers on the origins of this deadly virus, and the miscalculations made by our government during the pandemic. But starting a hearing by promising jail time for the man who could answer that question is the last way to get those answers to the American people once again.
And ignoring the president’s steady stream of lies on hiding this virus from the American people is just simply grotesque.
