The corporate media were predictably horrified by the explosive Oval Office meeting between President Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. But notably, the language journalists have been using to describe the meeting is virtually identical to that of Democratic politicians: namely, that the whole thing was a “premeditated,” “deliberate ambush,” meant to provide justification for the USA’s total diplomatic and financial abandonment of Ukraine.
The loudest Democratic voice in the room on this topic has been Connecticut Senator Chris Murphy, who had this to say about the meeting:
What we just witnessed between Donald Trump, JD Vance, and President Zelensky inside the White House was an ambush. It was a planned ambush, designed to embarrass President Zelensky, in order to benefit Vladimir Putin.
That’s eerily similar to how MSNBC host Chris Hayes described the meeting last week:
It was a planned ambush, to effectively jettison Ukraine, and complete the switching of sides of the U.S., in line with, again, Donald Trump and JD Vance’s Russia-first views.
Of course, that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Murphy was by no means the only Democrat to offer this lazy McCarthyite framing, and like dutiful apparatchiks, the majority of Hayes’s colleagues were right there with him regurgitating those same talking points:
It’s easy to see all of this and suspect that perhaps the media are taking marching orders from the Democrats. And thanks to the events of the 2024 election cycle, now we’ve got evidence to prove that that kind of thing actually happens.
