Hostin Demands Cameras in Trump Trial, Warns Reporters Know Nothing

April 3rd, 2023 2:03 PM

The anti-Trump pontificators on ABC’s The View spent the beginning of Monday’s show continuing to hype the indictment of the former President and what was to come. Interestingly, co-host Sunny Hostin demanded that cameras be allowed in the courtroom for the trial not just to allow them to gawk at the proceedings, but because reporters don’t know what they’re talking about and filter the information they share. There was also skepticism about the support Trump was receiving from the public.

Hostin told the audience that she found it “terrible that New York” was “one of only two states that does not allow cameras in the courtroom.”

Louisiana was the second.

“I testified in front of Congress in 2019 about this very topic,” Hostin recalled as she went on to warn that reporters don’t know what they’re talking about and selectively share what information they want their viewers to know:

And the problem is, when there are no cameras in the courtroom, you’re getting the information distilled for you from reporters, many of which don't have law degrees, many of which have never tried a case. And so, you are still not getting the bare bones truth. You are not seeing it with your eyes.

“And that was the difference with January 6. We saw what we saw and so we were able to distill it for yourselves,” she added.

Co-host Sara Haines agreed by saying a televised trial “would affect his followers the most.” Both fretted that his followers wouldn’t watch:

HOSTIN: Exactly.

HAINES: Because people watching more mainstream media will be able to deduce from what they’re saying.

HOSTIN: Exactly.

HAINES: But the people that won’t watch and will trust him will be—

HOSTIN: Will be those people. And it’s so very unfortunate.

Hostin concluded by expressing hope “this New York bill they're trying to pass will change things” and allow cameras in their courtrooms. She and co-host Whoopi Goldberg speculated that Louisiana wouldn’t change, hinting at racism.

Earlier in the segment, Goldberg cast doubt on Trump receiving substantial contributions to his 2024 presidential campaign since the indictment, to the tune of $5 million. Without evidence, she seemed to suggest that he was lying to the FEC.

Lying to the FEC is a crime.

“We don't know how much money he says he’s raised ‘cause he always like to inflate stuff. So, maybe he raised a couple of million, I don't know if he raised five. But whenever he says a number, I am always like, ‘Really, D?’” Goldberg scoffed.

Hostin didn’t critique Goldberg’s disinformation but instead whined that “the contributions are about $38-a-piece. And so, those are people who don't have a lot of money that are giving a little bit of money they have to a Donald Trump.” She suggested, without evidence, that the reason Trump decided to run for president again was for the legal cover and “he needs money for legal bills because he’s broke!”

Whoopi Goldberg’s disinformation was made possible because of lucrative sponsorships from Unilever and Febreze. Their contact information is linked.

SUNNY HOSTIN: He’s raised about $5 million.

ALYSSA FARAH GRIFFIN: He always raises money off of this stuff.

WHOOPI GOLDBERG: He says – He – We don't know how much money he says he’s raised ‘cause he always like to inflate stuff. So, maybe he raised a couple of million, I don't know if he raised five. But whenever he says a number, I am always like, “Really, D?”

HOSTIN: It’s being reported that it’s $5 million. But what concerns me the most of the $5 million is that each – the contributions are about $38-a-piece. And so, those are people who don't have a lot of money that are giving a little bit of money they have to a Donald Trump.

And I have said, the reason I think he's running for the government is one, because it’s very difficult -- DOJ policy to indict a sitting president. So, he’s hoping to stretch it out. And he needs money for legal bills. Because he’s broke!

HOSTIN: I will just say one other thing to Whoopi’s initial question about cameras in the courtroom.

I think it is terrible that New York is one of only two states that does not allow cameras in the courtroom. I testified in front of Congress in 2019 about this very topic. And the problem is, when there are no cameras in the courtroom, you’re getting the information distilled for you from reporters, many of which don't have law degrees, many of which have never tried a case. And so, you are still not getting the bare bones truth. You are not seeing it with your eyes.

And that was the difference with January 6. We saw what we saw and so we were able to distill it for yourselves.

SARA HAINES: And that would affect his followers the most.

And I really hope this New York bill they're trying to pass will change things. Because, Louisiana, I don't know, what's going to happen there. That's the other state that doesn’t allow cameras in the courtroom. But come on New York.

GOLDBERG: They will never allow it in Louisiana. You know that.

HOSTIN: Especially because of - well, Louisiana.
