MSNBC: Gun Violence Part of White Culture So GOP Protects It

March 29th, 2023 10:40 PM

On Wednesday's All In, host Chris Hayes chatted with faux Republican and former Florida Congressman David Jolly about how to take away the guns of law-abiding Americans because of the actions of a mentally ill transgender person who decided to go on a barbaric shooting spree at Covenant School in Nashville, Tennessee. Jolly made the outrageous and obviously false claim that Republicans tolerate gun violence because "that is part of the culture of young white men."

Hayes started off this portion of the fact-free segment by remarking how "when you say the word gun violence, one of the things that always strikes me here, and you see it here, is if you say the word crime, Republicans, there’s nothing, that's too much to go after crime in the big cities."

Yet according to Hayes, "If you say gun violence, which is probably the most deadly subset of crime, all of a sudden it's like, well, what are you going to do?"

Jolly, for his part, predictably agreed with Hayes that Republicans were against crime yet seem to tolerate gun violence: "For Republicans, crime is something that's committed by black Americans. Gun ownership and gun violence is something that is part of the culture of young white men, and so, Republicans protect it. And that's just the reality."

This is obviously outrageous on its face. By Hayes' own admission gun violence is a subset of crime so Republicans are obviously against gun violence. And the assertion is a version of a ridiculous trope that liberals fling at gun owners suggesting that if minorities started exercising their Second Amendment rights they'd have a change of heart.

Jolly's absurd claim that gun violence and gun ownership are "part of the culture of young white men" is also foolishly wrong. For starters, the person who shot and killed six people at Covenant School was a biological woman.

But statistically speaking, according to CBS News, there has been a "77 percent rise in female gun ownership from 2005 to 2020." This is because women rightfully believe they need to protect themselves from the crime epidemic in Democrat run cities.

CHRIS HAYES: When you say the word gun violence, one of the things that always strikes me here, and you see it here, is if you say the word crime, Republicans, there's no, there’s nothing, that's too much to go after crime in the big cities, crime. Crime is the enemy. If you say gun violence, which is probably the most deadly subset of crime, all of a sudden it's like, well, what are you going to do? Whatever the word is, that just changes everything.

DAVID JOLLY: Yeah, Chris, this is going to be hard but for Republicans, crime is something that's committed by black Americans.

HAYES: Yes, right.

JOLLY: Gun ownership and gun violence is something that is part of the culture of young white men, and so, Republicans protect it. And that's just the reality.
