Colbert Labels GOP Bad Christians For Budget Priorities

March 10th, 2023 9:54 AM

On Thursday, CBS The Late Show host Stephen Colbert declared Republicans to be bad Christians for their hypothetical budget which was one day after he compared Justice Samuel Alito to the Taliban for his Dobbs opinion.

Colbert set up his theology lesson by reporting that, “The New York Times describes Biden's budget as ‘dead-on-arrival’… The GOP quickly rejected Biden's budget, because they prefer ‘Deep cuts to health care, food assistance and housing programs for poor Americans.’ Yes.’”

Because The Late Show is more of a cathartic experience for liberals than a comedy show, Colbert waited for the booing from the audience to subside before continuing, “Now, now, it just reflects the bedrock Judeo-Christian values of the Republican Party and echoes the word of our Lord, ‘For I was hungry and you said, 'hey, who gave you that free food? Slap that fish out of his dirty little mouth!'"

Returning to Biden’s proposed budget, Colbert did his best to make Biden sound cool. Donning his aviators, Colbert declared:

Now, Biden knows his proposals are unpopular with the GOP and he don't care. Reportedly, the White House sees no downside whatsoever to throwing out things that would never pass the Republican-controlled House. The fight is the point. ‘Come at me, GOP! Come on. That's right. Come on. I trained with all the greats. The Pennsylvania Pummeler, the Scranton Scrapper, Kaiser Wilhelm. Come on! Get a knuckle sandwich on the whitest bread you ever tasted! Come on, Jack Dempsey!’

Buried further down in that New York Times article is the revelation that the proposal Colbert alluded to is just one of many competing versions for what the GOP budget will look like. Colbert also omitted several parts that are not exactly radical, such as work requirements for food stamps and Medicaid.

This segment was sponsored by Kellogg’s.

STEPHEN COLBERT: The New York Times describes Biden's budget as "dead-on-arrival." "Dead-on-arrival" is pretty harsh coming from a newspaper. My newspaper used to come delivered in a plastic bag. Now it comes in a little casket. But it's true. The GOP quickly rejected Biden's budget, because they prefer "Deep cuts to health care, food assistance and housing programs for poor Americans." Yes.

Now, now, it just reflects the bedrock Judeo-Christian values of the Republican Party and echoes the word of our Lord, "For I was hungry and you said, 'hey, who gave you that free food? Slap that fish out of his dirty little mouth!'"

Now—“shut your dirty little mouth!” Now, Biden knows his proposals are unpopular with the GOP and he don't care. Reportedly, the White House sees no downside whatsoever to throwing out things that would never pass the Republican-controlled House. The fight is the point. "Come at me, GOP! Come on. That's right. Come on. I trained with all the greats. The Pennsylvania Pummeler, the Scranton Scrapper, Kaiser Wilhelm. Come on! Get a knuckle sandwich on the whitest bread you ever tasted! Come on, Jack Dempsey!"
