The American College of Physicians (ACP) vowed to combat the spread of alleged disinformation deemed a so-called “serious threat to public health” in the digital space.
The ACP embarked on a mission last year to attempt to assert itself as a quasi watchdog over healthcare information published on social media and digital news outlets. The internal medicine organization’s draconian commitment to control public perspective on COVID-19 was pushed Jan. 31 in a newly laid-out seven-point mission statement that included a “misinformation” targeting partnership with YouTube.
“ACP is committed to stopping and preventing the spread of disinformation and misinformation,” they wrote in a statement.
“We vigorously support the use of science and scientific expertise, based on the best available evidence, and remain concerned about the spread of both disinformation and misinformation on social media, public news channels and other digital channels,” ACP continued.
The ACP asserted that the organization “will look for tangible efforts to support this serious threat to public health.” YouTube stated in its community guidelines that the platform will not allow “content that spreads medical misinformation that contradicts local health authorities’ (LHA) or the World Health Organization’s (WHO) medical information about COVID-19.”
One of these “tangible efforts” included a partnership with YouTube to promote a supposed educational COVID-19 series in late 2022. By partnering with the platform, ACP’s goal was to shape the public’s “perception of COVID-19 health information” using a “trusted physician voice perspective.”
ACP linked out to a Jan. 17, 2022, video titled “How Do We Know Covid-19 Vaccines are Safe,” which urged viewers to trust COVID-19 vaccines based on an ACP approved cardiologist being “personally convinced.” Another video in the YouTube series “Ask Your Internist” that ACP linked out to told viewers “How to Access Accurate COVID-19 Information Online” listed self-proclaimed trustworthy organizations such as the FDA, CDC, and of course, the ACP.
YouTube labeled the ACP an “accredited healthcare educator” based on criteria defined by health organizations, the National Academy of Medicine and the American Public Health Association. Both organizations focused on leftist political agendas in their healthcare mission. The National Academy of Medicine concentrated on “structural racism,” and the American Public Health Association targeted topics such as “racism,” “equity” and “climate change.”
This is just one example of a medical organization that worked with Big Tech to hijack discourse on important health information the public deserved to know. One of the latest batches of Twitter Files revealed that Pfizer’s partner BioNTech directly pressured the platform to “censor activists demanding low-cost generic vaccines for low-income countries.”
