How can you say that a Democrat is in trouble without saying that a Democrat is in trouble? Just skip the word ´Democrat´.
This is exactly what the national Spanish-language newscasts did, not in one report, but in report after report – a solid 39 minutes of airtime in a little over 24-hours- about the scandal involving four “Latino politicians” from Los Angeles. The public officials, considered to be the apex of Democrat Hispanic power, were caught red-handed on a recorded conversation where they made racist and disparaging remarks about other Latinos, and about the Black son of a fellow white Democrat council member who is also gay. Telemundo, Univision and CNN En Español, all skipped mentioning their political affiliation, a fact that raised many red flags.
“Latino Politicians”; “Known Politicians”; “Political Figures”; “People's Representatives”; “Los Angeles Officials”; “Los Angeles Councilmen”; “Public Officials”- are just a few examples of how the news teams described Los Angeles City Council president Nury Martinez, fellow councilmembers Gil Cedillo and Kevin de León, and Ron Herrera, the now former president of the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor. De León, by the way, makes regular appearances at the Latino media as a trusted “Democrat expert”.
This report that aired over Telemundo´s midday news edition on Tuesday, October 11th, is a perfect snapshot of how the rest of the Latino media spent 37 minutes on the scandal, not mentioning the word Democrat in a single instance. Take a look:

FELICIDAD AVELEYRA: The uproar created by the racist comments of Los Angeles City Council members in California continues to be something to talk about. The resignation of the president of the municipal council, Nury Martínez, is now joined by that of union leader Ron Herrera, who was in the recorded conversation. Francisco Cuevas is in Los Angeles with the latest. Francisco, we hear you.
FRANCISCO CUEVAS: Hi Felicidad. Greetings from Los Angeles, California, where the controversy continues around a conversation between a group of Latino politicians that was leaked and in which they are unfortunately insulting an African-American boy, the son of a city counselor, and also, the Oaxacan community. The recordings were made public and, well, the community has already come together, as well as religious leaders right now who are gathering here again to make their discontent known and call for the removal of the four people involved in this conversation. Today the City Council meets at 10 a.m. and this will be an opportunity for the people involved in this conversation to talk about their views and ask for a public apology; at least that's what those people who are gathered here behind my back are asking for today. And well, um, the controversy cost the position of Nury Martinez who was the President of the City Council and who apologized after these conversations surfaced, and said that she was leaving her position as president of the City Council, but not as a council member. Right now, as I tell you, members of the community are gathering to demand more answers about these conversations that were recorded and that were made public. The source is not released, but we will have more details this afternoon on Noticias Telemundo.
Take notice of how anchor Felicidad Aveleyra opened the report: “The uproar created by the racist comments of Los Angeles City Council members in California continues to be something to talk about.”
Following her lead, correspondent Francisco Cuevas, reporting from Los Angeles with a group of activists in the background, also kept the (D) word undercover: “Greetings from Los Angeles, California, where the controversy continues around a conversation between a group of Latino politicians that was leaked and in which they are unfortunately insulting an African-American boy, the son of a city counselor, and also, the Oaxacan community”. “The community has already come together… to call for the removal of the four people involved in this conversation.”
It’s amazing how little is said on air when a controversy involves elected DEMOCRAT public officials. Were they Republicans, can you imagine the uproar? From MAGA ultra-right-wingers, to fascists, to you name it; the coverage would contain the word Republican every other second.
Such is the blatant bias that advertisers like Tide and Downy sponsor in the Latino media. Follow the links to call them out.
