The View Denies Then Admits Late-Term Abortions Happen, Claims GOP Hates Mothers

September 15th, 2022 10:38 AM

In the wake of Senator Lindsey Graham’s (R-SC) 15-week abortions ban bill, the cackling coven of ABC’s The View kicked off Wednesday’s show by shrieking about how evil Republicans were (despite pushback to the bill from Graham’s party colleagues). But misinformation was the word of the day as the cast falsely claimed late-term abortions were a “myth” before admitting they’re real; along with smears that those in the GOP were not “good” people who hated mothers and needed to “come into the 21st century.”

It was anti-pro-lifer Sara Haines who declared that late-term abortions are a “myth” the right “used to get a certain political outcome, there is no such thing as people having late-term abortions!”

“Say that again,” co-host Whoopi Goldberg requested. “There is no such thing as people having late-term abortions!” Haines obliged.

But in her next sentence, she admitted “1.3 percent of abortions are performed at greater than 21 weeks…” Yet she still insisted late-term abortions were “a myth being shopped around to get a certain political outcome.” “So, until we are all clear on the information and data, we should not be toying with this because it's being falsely shopped around,” she demanded.

Later in the segment, Haines and faux “conservative” Alyssa Farah Griffin teamed up to push the debunked claim that pro-lifers only care about the unborn and don’t give a rip after the birth. “[T]he conservatives tend to come at those social issues with, have that baby no matter what, but we will not help you,” Haines sneered.

“And this is my gripe,” Farah Griffin added. “…to the Republican Party, to my friends, we have to provide for mothers once they have kids.” Exposing how uneducated she was with the pro-life movement, she suggested their position was: “[Y]ou don't want them to have an abortion, but they're on their own after that.”

“But the party has got to come into the 21st century because we have to help mothers. Being pro-life needs to mean throughout life,” she proclaimed.

At one point, Joy Behar praised how some European countries have abortion on demand, and warned that things were “done” for women if Republicans win upcoming elections:

Make no mistake. This is just the beginning. If they take power of the Congress in November, possibly the presidency, we're done. You know what? Lindsey says up to 15 weeks. They will overthrow Roe V. Wade and we'll go back to 1959, and I remember that period, okay?

To this screed, Farah Griffin said Behar made “excellent points.”

In a different anti-Republican rant that got weak pushback from Farah Griffin, not-so Sunny Hostin said Republicans were not good people and wanted states’ rights so they could be racist:

[T]he Republican Party has always been the party of states' rights. It hasn't really worked out for the rest of the country because states’ rights meant that black kids and white kids went to different schools. And states’ rights meant that black people couldn't marry white people.

“I guess the onus is on people to be good and do the right thing, and that doesn't necessarily happen with your party,” she rolled her eyes at Farah Griffin.

Just as a reminder: before the start of this season, Farah Griffin said she and the rest of the cast were working to “elevate the discourse.” It’s unclear how this conversation does that. In fact, it's dangerous.

SARA HAINES: And just to clear up an often referenced myth that is used to get a certain political outcome, there is no such thing as people having late-term abortions!

WHOOPI GOLDBERG: Say that again.

HAINES: There is no such thing as people having late-term abortions!

[Applause]

1.3 – 1.3 percent of abortions are performed at greater than 21 weeks, and usually for heartbreaking medical reasons.

GOLDBERG: Say that again.

[Laughter]

HAINES: That is only done for heartbreaking medical reasons. I have yet to see one situation where someone decides that. That is being a myth being shopped around to get a certain political outcome. And 91 percent of all abortions are performed in the first trimester.

[Applause]

So, until we are all clear on the information and data, we should not be toying with this because it's being falsely shopped around.

SUNNY HOSTIN: It still doesn’t make sense to me – is that, the Republican Party has always been the party of states' rights. It hasn't really worked out for the rest of the country because states’ rights meant that black kids and white kids went to different schools. And states’ rights meant that black people couldn't marry white people.

And so the states' rights argument generally doesn't work for our country because you have to, you know, I guess the onus is on people to be good and do the right thing, and that doesn't necessarily happen with your party.

However, I –

[Applause]

ALYSSA FARAH GRIFFIN: Let me ask you though, we do talk a lot at this table about how everyone has a right to vote and be represented, and there's no really more --

HOSTIN: Your party doesn't really do that either, cause it's not one person one vote. It's the Electoral College.

FARAH GRIFFIN: But isn’t there not anymore direct representation than your state representatives? You elect them to represent your viewpoints--

GOLDBERG: We did and they did and they made a law and now y'all went around and decided because your religious fervor got you crazy and decided that that –

Listen. I believe in life. I'm not anti-life. I've never been anti-life. I'm anti-people putting their fingers in other people's business of who they love and how they love, and I am –

[Applause]

I am incensed that this is something that people really thought they should do without doing the homework and finding out what it means.

JOY BEHAR: Make no mistake. This is just the beginning. If they take power of the Congress in November, possibly the presidency, we're done. You know what? Lindsey says up to 15 weeks. They will overthrow Roe V. Wade and we'll go back to 1959, and I remember that period, okay?

SARA HAINES: There's also just no social funding when it comes to education, paid family leave, all those things that help support a family because when you look at the financials of this country, they are very low. So, we're talking about people that absolutely need help.

And I had a statistic before and I'm forgetting right now about the amount of women. It's usually 20 to 35 that are choosing family planning and they usually only have one abortion. A lot of people like to shop around that it's been multiples. They have one because they cannot afford it and yet the conservatives tend to come at those social issues with, have that baby no matter what, but we will not help you.

FARAH GRIFFIN: And this is my gripe. But I do want to respond because, Joy give out excellent points, it's very important to the Republican Party, to my friends, we have to provide for mothers once they have kids. That's the problem where you cannot say you do not want them, you know, you don't want them to have abortion, but they're on their own after that. I do appreciate that some people like Senator Marco Rubio have started championed paid family leave.

HOSTIN: They’re going to say it’s a handout and they're going to say we can't afford it.

HAINES: It doesn’t matter. If they do it, we’ll take it.

FARAH GRIFFIN: But the party has got to come into the 21st century because we have to help mothers. Being pro-life needs to mean throughout life.
