President Joe Biden called for social media companies to censor American citizens online during a speech Jan. 13, amidst a presidency marked by censorship and government crackdowns.
Biden made a “special appeal to social media companies and media outlets” calling on them to “please deal with the misinformation and disinformation that's on your shows” in his address. He said, “It has to stop," admonishing Big Tech and the media for somehow “sitting on the sidelines'' by not censoring enough speech.
Biden’s calls for censorship marked the first month of his administration.
Surgeon general Dr. Vivek Murthy declared he was “urging all Americans to help slow the spread of health misinformation during the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond,” according to a public advisory he released in July. He proclaimed in no uncertain terms that “health misinformation is a serious threat to public health.”
White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki also called for Big Tech to take pro-censorship actions. “There's [sic] …proposed changes that we have made to social media platforms, including Facebook, and those specifically are four key steps.” Those included publicly sharing the impact of “misinformation”; “a robust enforcement strategy”; “faster action against harmful posts”; and promoting “quality information sources.”
She noted that, “Decisions to regulate or hold to account any platform would certainly be a policy decision, but in the interim, we’re going to continue to call out disinformation, and call out where that information travels.”
It may be hard for some to even imagine Big Tech censoring more on behalf of Biden and the COVID-19 narrative. YouTube recently made headlines when it purged an interview between world famous podcaster Joe Rogan and Texas-based cardiologist Dr. Peter McCullough about the COVID-19 pandemic.
Censorship has become so outrageous that ethics watchdog and Alphabet shareholder The National Legal and Policy Center reportedly demanded Alphabet-owned Google cough up its records of banning content on behalf of the Biden administration.
Conservatives are under attack. Contact your local representative and demand that Big Tech be held to account to mirror the First Amendment while providing transparency, clarity on “hate speech” and equal footing for conservatives.
