CNN's New Day Tuesday morning mocked Joe Manchin's statement explaining that as a West Virginian, he couldn't be intimidated into supporting Build Back Better. New Day aired a clip of Manchin saying:
"Well, guess what? I'm from West Virginia. I'm not from where they're from. And they can just beat the living crap out of people, and think they'll be submissive."
Co-host John Berman led the charge, saying:
"You know I always love it when someone says, I'm from West Virginia, we don't back down to anything. People from all 50 states will say that."
Substitute host Erica Hill then chimed in: "People from Connecticut, Berman, do not back down." Berman: "I'm from Connecticut. We don't back down. That's why they call us the Nutmeg State...One state doesn't back down more than another."
In his past political runs, Manchin aired two different TV ads, here and here, showing him literally shooting pieces of legislation [including a tax on fossil fuels] that he opposed. Don't think you'd see that kind of advertising too often elsewhere.
Berman and his CNN cohorts might like to imagine that no cultural differences remain among the states and regions. That everyone gets their news, and views, from the same liberal-media sources.
But, thank goodness, those differences do persist. And West Virginia is a leader in upholding its cultural traditions.
So yeah, West Virginian Joe Manchin just might be less inclined to back down than, say, a guy from Delaware.

JOE MANCHIN: Well, guess what? I'm from West Virginia. I'm not from where they're from. And they can just beat the living crap out of people, and think they'll be submissive. Period.
NATASHA ALFORD: I do know that there are aspects of Build Back Better which do benefit Joe Manchin's constituents in West Virginia. And so, perhaps, that is the approach, right? Think of the policies that will affect his constituents. If he rejects those, he has to go back and explain why he didn't support them when he had an opportunity.
