On December 1, 2021, the U.S. Supreme Court heard oral arguments in a landmark abortion case, Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization. Outside the court, activists on both pro-lifers and pro-abortion groups rallied.
Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization involves the state of Mississippi’s 15 week abortion ban (enacted in 2018) which was challenged by a local abortion clinic and struck down by lower U.S. courts on the grounds that it violates the right to abortion provided by Roe v. Wade. The fact that SCOTUS has decided to hear the case is highly notable.
If SCOTUS were to uphold the Mississippi ban – current SCOTUS justices would have to reassess whether or not state abortion bans are constitutional.
