The annual March for Life will be incorporating some major changes for its upcoming event, opting for a virtual “march” this year in order to prevent the spread of COVID and to abide by extra security measures which have been installed in and around the nation’s capital.
In a recent press release put out on the organization’s website, March for Life announced that the 2021 pro-life rally will be a virtual event for the general public. Though a small number of pro-life leaders will convene in Washington D.C. to represent the millions of pro-life Americans who cannot be there.
“In light of the fact that we are in the midst of a pandemic which may be peaking, and in view of the heightened pressures that law enforcement officers and others are currently facing in and around the Capitol, this year’s March for Life will look different,” the statement read. The organization then asked that usual rally-goers “stay home and to join the March virtually.”
Though it’s unfortunate that the larger pro-life community won’t be able to march together in huge numbers for the end to abortion, this new year has already proved complicated for those trying to gather in large groups in D.C. March for Life claimed that a virtual march will be done for the safety of people from the pandemic and for the safety of law enforcement.
Of course, the organization is avoiding hosting a potential COVID "super spreader" event, not to mention trying to avoid controversy with Capitol police, who were rocked by a riot breaking off from a pro-Trump rally two weeks ago. The press release explained, “The protection of all of those who participate in the annual March, as well as the many law enforcement personnel and others who work tirelessly each year to ensure a safe and peaceful event, is a top priority of the March for Life.”
Again, March for Life stated that they will “invite a small group of pro-life leaders from across the country to march in Washington, DC this year,” and asked pro-lifers across the country to consider those leaders as their representatives.
March for Life expressed hope that 2022’s event will see everyone return to D.C. in the hundreds of thousands to profess the sanctity of human life, but until then, urged every pro-lifer to tune in online. The website clarified that virtual attendees need to RSVP via the link and will be invited through their emails to begin viewing the event. The March for Life will be held on January 29, and the theme of this year's event is "Together Strong, Life Unites."
