In a blog filed under the tag of “racial justice,” Deadspin’s Carron J. Phillips torched the National Football League for not getting more deeply involved in Tuesday’s Georgia Senate elections. He writes that too many of the league’s owners are in bed with the Republican Party, which is threatening America’s democracy.
With so much at stake in those elections, Phillips assumed the nation’s most powerful sports league would have taken an active role in Georgia. Politics first and sports second is supposed to be the new normal now, ya know.
The ramifications of that election could affect “millions of the NFL’s fans,” Phillips wrote, but the NFL was “nowhere to be found. And the reason for that absence is that the NFL is in bed with the political party that’s ‘a threat to the fundamental principles of our democracy.’”
In October, Phillips’ Deadspin colleagues shamed the NFL’s GOP donors by posting the full list.
In the opinion of Phillips (appearing in above photo), the NFL never really cared about social justice. He says, “(NFL Commissioner) Roger Goodell, (Saints quarterback) Drew Brees, and the NFL think Black Americans are stupid. They actually believe the acts they put on in 2020 worked”:
“I hope Goodell, Brees, and anyone else involved in the racial charades the NFL put on last year realize that today (Tuesday), of all days, is why Black America always has, and always will, see right through you. Because for all the apologizing, and all the end zones that were etched with ‘End Racism’ and ‘It Takes All Of Us,’ why haven’t we heard from them about an election that’s arguably more important than the one we had in November?”
FYI, Brees was dragged through the mud by the intolerant left last year for saying, “I will never agree with anybody disrespecting the flag of the United States of America or our country.” He later backed down and said: “I stand with the Black community in the fight against systemic racial injustice and police brutality and support the creation of real policy change that will make a difference.”
Seven months later, Phillips is ripping Brees for not having engaged in social justice activism and for not supporting Raphael Warnock, the pro-abortion Democrat who has won one of the two Georgia Senate races. (Deadspin totally trashed his Republican foe, Atlanta Dream co-owner and "all-world idiot" Kelly Loeffler, too).
Commissioner Goodell gets roasted for insufficient political activity, as well. Last year he said, “The NFL stands with the Black community, the players, clubs, and fans confronting systemic racism. We will not relent in our work.”
Phillips hopes Black Americans never forget that the league’s white commissioner and one of its most popular white quarterbacks “sat back and did absolutely nothing after guaranteeing that they would almost do anything to help.”
Current and former NFL social justice warriors got praise heaped on them for their political activism. Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes was active in Georgia’s run-off Senate election through LeBron James’ “More Than A Vote” coalition. Former NFL player Takeo Spikes wrote an op-ed for USA Today about rural Black voters flipping the Senate.
Phillips also blasted “our current President” who “attempted the greatest act of voter suppression on record,” in urging Georgia’s Secretary of State to “find 11,780 votes.” It’s no surprise to Phillips that former President Barack Obama (and first-class hypocrite who posed the greatest threats to religious liberty in U.S. history and used the IRS to stifle conservative opponents) called it a threat to the “fundamental principles of our democracy.”
