Movie stars -- is there anything they don’t know? More to the point, is there anything their media sycophants won’t quote them on? 
Take, for example, the recent New York Times interview with George Clooney. Reporter Kyle Buchanan asks Clooney about his new movie, about directing vs. acting and some other stuff, you get the sense they’re both impatient to get to the important part: Clooney’s take on those dreadful Republicans.
Buchanan says, “There’s a moment in [Clooney’s new sci fi flick] The Midnight Sky where your character puts a mask on a little girl and says, ‘Never take it off, no matter what.’ I would imagine that line plays very differently now than you meant it to.”
Clooney answers: “The idea that we politicize things like this is crazy.”
Boom: from zero to politicized in 10 words, and without a hint of irony -- that's why the man's a celebrity. He goes on:
Had Trump come out at the very beginning and said, “We’re all going to wear masks because it’s the right thing to do and it’s going to save a lot of lives,” the whole country would have gotten behind him and he would have been re-elected. But he thought it would affect his economy, so he chose to say it didn’t exist. And now we’re going to have 350,000 people dead.
This is a fascinating argument. Lefties in the media and Hollywood -- not to mention the Twitter howler monkeys and Democrat pols -- stood ready to put aside impeachment and Russia and Trump’s supposed racism/misogyny/homophobia, and gladly link arms with him in a burst of patriotism. He had only to call for masks when nobody else was calling for masks. (And everybody’s wearing masks now but … oh, never mind.)
Somehow though, Clooney only gets the warm fuzzies for conservatives in retrospect. “The world is different now,” he proclaims, and goes on to call Sen. Ted Cruz “a yutz.” Then he shows off his stunning power to know the minds and hearts of Republican yutzes:
Every single one of these guys have aspirations for bigger things — Marco Rubio, Ted Cruz, Mike Pence, all of them. They think people will travel with them because, “I’ve stuck with you, Don,” but the truth is, they won’t. They stay with Donald because Donald, for all of his immense problems as a human being, is a charismatic carnival barker.
And his voters are gullible marks. But Clooney was ready to join them in singing the “Battle Hymn of the Republic” (however muffled by the masks) and march off toward a glorious second Trump term. Really.
