TV Newswer’s A.J. Katz reported Thursday afternoon that MSNBC has pulled the plug on Trump Derangement Syndrome sufferer Donny Deutsch’s Saturday Night Politics, a taped show that aired only 13 times at 8:00 p.m. Eastern.
And according to Katz, this was the fifth Deustch-hosted show to be cancelled following previous attempts with CNBC, CNN, MSNBC, and USA (which was a scripted show), but Deutsch will nonetheless keep his perch as a frequent guest on MSNBC shows. Talk about failing upwards!
Katz also provided a breakdown of how his ratings were the highest for any MSNBC show for that slot, but it still wasn’t up to snuff (click “expand”):
The network will fill the Saturday 8 p.m. hour with Friday’s re-run of All In with Chris Hayes going forward, as it looks to bolster its weekend news programming.
Saturday Night Politics would end up being the most-watched Saturday 8 p.m. show in network history, and while it regularly beat CNN in total viewers, it couldn’t match CNN Newsroom and other CNN Saturday 8 p.m. programming in the key A25-54 demo; and it couldn’t come anywhere close to matching the ratings of Fox News’ 8 p.m. show, Watters World.
The series premiere of Saturday Night Politics averaged 919,000 total viewers, while the second episode hit 898,000. The remaining broadcasts couldn’t match those early numbers.
Despite this brief run, NewsBusters was able to compile a short list of items on Saturday Night Politics. On the first show that ran on May 4, Deutsch trumpeted South Bend, Indiana Mayor Pete Buttigieg (D) for having a “core excellence of humanity” that “brings out hope in the better angels in all of us” while President Trump lacks all those things.
Fastforwarding to July 13, Deutsch foisted upon his handful of viewers the fear that “fascist stuff is coming” during the Trump presidency and encouraged Democrats to employ scare tactics to win the 2020 election.
And then on July 27, Deutsch and his fellow panelists exploded, calling Trump both a “Christian fascist” and modern day “Hitler” who “wants to be President for life” leading an American version of the pro-apartheid party in South Africa.
So, despite all the promos and praise for his show (like this one that our friend Cameron Cawthrone at the Free Beacon flagged), it wasn’t enough to save Deustch and his poorly-rated show.
Too bad, so sad!
