Kicking Into Campaign Mode, Univision Distorts Trump Immigration Policy

June 11th, 2019 2:26 PM

Univision has fired what amounts to its opening salvo in the 2020 U.S. presidential election: a deviously pro-Democrat promotion of the stances the candidates take on the nation’s immigration policy mess.

The network that made a supreme effort to elect Hillary in 2016 is now touting the results of a immigration policy questionnaire it sent to the top 23 Democrat candidates for President (the total number of Democrats who have filed their candidacies with the Federal Election Commission is currently more than 160).

Univision, however, deliberately did not send its immigration policy questionnaire to President Trump, or make any attempt to seek answers from his re-election campaign committee. Instead, in its multi-platform feature about the Democrat candidates’ immigration policy stances, the nation’s number one Spanish-language media outlet deliberately took the liberty to distort and mischaracterize the President’s position on key immigration issues.

As usual, Univision’s chief activist anchorman Jorge Ramos led the dishonest attack.

JORGE RAMOS, ANCHOR, UNIVISION: Speaking about politics, the principal Democratic presidential candidates posted their positions on immigration and border security to questions from Univision News. At least 16 candidates explained how they would change the current immigration policies of the country and many of their answers contrast with the postures of President Trump. You can check out their answers on Univision.com.

In the fine print on the Univision questionnaire, the network even acknowledges that it shaped the questions to the candidates solely in collaboration with amnesty and Democrat activists: specifically, Cristina Jiménez of United We Dream and Pili Tobar, Deputy Director of America’s Voice and former Hispanic Media Director at the DNC.

The questions clearly reflect the priorities of Univision and the activists, including securing U.S. citizenship and federal health care benefits for all the 11 million-plus people who are currently unlawfully present in the United States, along with the millions more who are currently DACA-eligible or under Temporary Protected Status.

In its presentation of the questionnaire results, Univision dishonestly took it upon itself to portray President Trump’s policy positions not only in the worst possible light, but also very inaccurately. For example, earlier this year President Trump stated he is actually open to amnesty “on a much bigger deal, whether on immigration or something else. Likewise there will be no big push to remove the 11,000,000 plus people who are here illegally.” In fact, under President Trump, deportation levels are currently below where they were at this same point during President Obama’s first term.

President Trump also sought congressional approval of legislation that would have provided legal status to the entire 1.8 million DACA-eligible population, in exchange for fully funding border wall construction. His new immigration policy plan, announced on May 16, 2019 also “makes no change to the number of green cards allocated each year.”

Univision, however, sweepingly declares that “The president does not support immigration reform that legalizes undocumented immigrants” and has sought to “reduce legal immigration.” Similarly, though President Trump secured $1.3 billion from congressional Democrats this year for border wall funding, Univision erroneously affirms that “the construction of a wall has been one of the main promises of the president, though he has failed to secure congressional funding.”

Finally, it is notable that Democratic presidential frontrunner Joe Biden pointedly declined to participate in Univision’s opening campaign charade. Perhaps Biden and his campaign have taken note of the results of Hillary’s no-holds-barred embrace and alliance with the network in 2016, and are judiciously seeking to avoid a repetition of that disaster.
