CBS offered a socialist Muppet-music opening to the Late Show with Stephen Colbert on February 20. Kermit the Frog sang a version of his trademark tune "It's Not Easy Being Green," but this time it was touting that "the Green Deal is a good idea" and mocked the idea that it was a "government takeover." Kermit sang between clips of President Trump and Fox News personalities.
For decades, the marketers of Kermit declined to endorse explicitly a party or program like this. Are the Muppets jumping the shark? Does Trump make every liberal shout from the rooftops?
Bret Baier and Sean Hannity appeared in video clips before the singing began.
KERMIT THE FROG (singing): It's not easy being green. People think you want to outlaw cows and other things
DONALD TRUMP: You're not allowed to own cows anymore! ♪
KERMIT: And people will attack your green plan because they say it's a government takeover-- or, again, that weird, weird cow thing.
DAN BONGINO: There are going to be cow assassination squads now?
KERMIT: But the green deal is a good Idea -- and green can be cool even if you mock it.
JEANNINE PIRRO: Cows farting!
KERMIT: Okay, enough of the cow stuff. [Singing] So from one puppet to another... [split screen, singing to Trump] Please give Green a chance.
[Talking, sarcastically] Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go rid the Earth of cows.
MUPPET COW: I knew it!
The leftist group Friends of the Earth tweeted "Thanks @KermitTheFrog for sticking up for the #GreenNewDeal! And no, we don't want "cow assassination squads". The radical "Justice Democrats" also promoted Kermit's song as a "Must watch."
This satire intentionally overlooks what Team Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez actually wrote in their Frequently Asked Questions document about the Green New Deal. They called for building “high-speed rail at a scale where air travel stops becoming necessary,” and also "We set a goal to get to net-zero, rather than zero emissions, in 10 years because we aren’t sure that we’ll be able to fully get rid of farting cows and airplanes that fast."
This satire seems designed to shame conservatives out of satire against the Green New Deal.
