The Razzie Awards, given out annually for the “worst in cinema” of the year, may not be the first place you think of when you think of political bias. But the 2019 edition of the Golden Raspberry (“Razzies”) Awards took an obnoxious and capricious anti-Trump angle that extended to the First Lady. The nominees were proudly featured on RottenTomatoes, the popular movie review aggregation site.
Besides appearances by John Travolta and Johnny Depp, it was jarring to see one of the other of the five nominees for Worst Actor: Donald Trump, for his appearances in two documentaries, right-winger Dinesh D’Souza’s Death of a Nation, and left-winger Michael Moore’s Fahrenheit 11/9.
Two of the five nominees for Worst Supporting Actress were former Trump adviser Kellyanne Conway and First Lady Melania Trump (both for clips in Fahrenheit 11/9).
For good measure, D’Souza’s Death of a Nation received a nomination for “Worst Remake, Rip-Off, or Sequel” and “Worst Screenplay.” Needless to say, leftist hero Michael Moore was a no-show on the Razzies’ list.
Piling on, they awarded Trump one of the nominees for Worst Screen Combo: “Donald J. Trump & His Self-Perpetuating Pettiness – Death of a Nation, Fahrenheit 11/9”
Hardy har har!
A rather amateurish and tasteless accompanying clip, which lumped in the year's mass shootings with the year's poorly received films, included excerpts of President Trump meeting with Vladimir Putin, and a closing logo that got in another bit of cheap Russia-obsessive snark: “For full list of categories -- look below, check out Pravda or go to: Razzies.com.”
If you can wait that long, The Razzie winners will be revealed February 23.
