The CW once again kickstarts its big DC Comics crossover event with The Flash, Arrow, and Supergirl. December 9 started the three-night “Elseworlds” event with “Elseworlds Part 1” on The Flash. While The Flash is not nearly as unbearably one-sided as a certain other comic-book series whose time slot it took this Sunday, that didn’t stop the show from dropping a discredited wage gap reference, of all things.
In Smallville, Clark Kent AKA Superman (Tyler Hoechlin) is settling into the Kent farm with his reporter girlfriend Lois Lane (Elizabeth Tulloch) and super cousin Kara Danvers AKA Supergirl (Melissa Benoist). They discuss their recent trip to Argo City, one of the last remaining vestiges of the extinct planet Krypton. Although Clark is hesitant to have Lois write a story on their trip, she convinces him to cover it based on the unique experience and the potential boost to her reporting image. “One small step for Lois Lane, one giant step for Lois Lane’s career,” she calls it.
“Says the woman who’s already the most famous, feared, and intrepid reporter on two planets,” Clark responds.
Lois then comments wryly, “And yet, someone on this farm is still making 21 cents on the dollar more than me. And it ain’t Kara, honey.”
The episode features a person literally rewriting reality, and this was the one moment that took me out of everything. How many times do we need to disprove and dismantle the “wage gap” myth before it finally fades into oblivion? When everyone from the Daily Wire to Time Magazine to CBS News to Harvard University calls it a myth, that’s when liberals should give up. You’d think “the most famous, feared, and intrepid reporter on two planets” would know about a thing called job choice. Or maternity leave. Or the concept of men working longer hours in more risk-heavy fields.
This is sadly only Day 1 of this crossover, and we haven’t even reached Supergirl yet. With the arrival of the lesbian Batwoman on the horizon, I fear it will only get worse from here.
