Google now has to take claims that it censors conservatives seriously.
After meeting with GOP lawmakers on Friday, September 28, Google CEO Sundar Pichai agreed to testify before the House Judiciary Committee in November. According to USA Today, Pichai answered many, many questions on Google’s alleged bias towards conservatives. House Majority Leader Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) said in the meeting that big tech had caused “harm to consumers.”
Pichai told USA Today, “We remain committed to continuing an active dialogue with members from both sides of the aisle, working proactively with Congress on a variety of issues, explaining how our products help millions of American consumers and businesses, and answering questions as they arise."
Pichai met with Republicans and Democrats, as well as Trump’s economic advisor, Larry Kudlow. McCarthy called the meeting “the start of a conversation that I believe is long overdue -- and that responsibility falls on both sides.”
Conservatives have expressed concern about Google’s ranking practices in light of recent studies and leaked emails showing Google’s apparent bias against conservatives. The Media Research Center has repeatedly called for congressional hearings for Google to explain its practices, algorithms, and supposed neutrality.
