On CNN's New Day Sunday, co-host Christi Paul essentially took a gratuitous swipe at the White House by highlighting the story of a retired school teacher who decided to get cocky by correcting and grading a letter sent to her by the White House which was signed by President Donald Trump.
Some of the corrections were for picky things like capitalizing words like "President" and "Federal" in cases when it is technically not correct to do so. At 7:30 a.m. Eastern, the letter was displayed on screen as Paul recalled:
All right, take a look at this paper. I know it looks like another graded school paper, right? There's some errors, teacher's correcting it. Well, if you take a closer look, yes, it says "The White House" there. This is a letter from President Trump to Yvonne Mason. She's a retired English composition teacher. And it's full of what she calls, quote, "silly mistakes."
It appears CNN is grabbing "news" content from the leftist Huffington Post, which delighted in Mason writing “Have ya’ll tried grammar and style check?” at the top of the document. “OMG this is WRONG!” she wrote elsewhere, pointing out a capitalization error.
The CNN host then admitted that the letter was most likely written by staff rather than by President Trump himself as she added:
Now, she received it in response to a letter she'd written about the Parkland, Florida, school shooting, and Mason did what she always did at school. She corrected the writing -- she returned it to the White House. And even she says the form letter was most likely written by a staff member, not by the President, but the President did sign it.
It is noteworthy that there is actually precedent for capitalizing words referring to parts of the government or government officials in documents like the U.S. Constitution, so perhaps the staffer who wrote the letter has actually taken the time to read the Constitution recently.
