Comedian Michelle Wolf from The Daily Show responded "I don't care" when asked by Meghan McCain on The View on Wednesday if her "comedy" appearance at the White House Correspondents Association on April 28 caused the reporters' organization to stop hiring a comedian for their annual dinner.The rest of the View crew surrounded Wolf with encouragement and support, and McCain was smiling through the question:
MEGHAN McCAIN: So I know you know this, but I actually said that I thought your standup routine was a gift to the Trump administration and that liberals were criticizing you as well. The association is saying it's considering having no comedians whatsoever in the future. How would you feel if you killed another comedian's job?
MICHELLE WOLF: I mean, I don't care! [ Laughter, applause ] It's not, like, a great job. I mean, it's -- I think everyone that has ever done it has been, like, “Great, now I don't have to do it again.” I don't think -- I mean the whole time I called it a homework assignment. But it being, like, a gift to Trump, I don't think it was a gift to Trump any more than every single "news" show, and I put that in quotes, “news,” is a gift to Trump.
Isn't it a little weird for a comedian from a fake-news show to be decrying all the other news shows in quotes? That might be expected from NewsBusters, but not from comedians who get paid to make nasty liberal jokes by journalism organizations.
McCain also asked "Did you speak to Sarah Huckabee afterwards? Did you have any awkward interaction?" Wolf replied "I smiled at her, and she looked away." Joy Behar chided Sanders and Kellyanne Conway for failing to smile and laugh throughout the insults. I wonder if Joy could do that if she was the target.
When Sunny Hostin asked about whether she was mocking the appearance of Trump's press secretary, she said to critics "I thought you were smarter....Just listen to the joke,” she said. “I think it said more about them.” The women briefly referred to Wolf's joke comparing Sanders to the vicious Aunt Lydia character enforcing the theocracy on The Handmaid's Tale, but they didn't make Wolf defend that crack.
Whoopi Goldberg was delighted that Wolf mocked the appearance of Mitch McConnell and Chris Christie. Sara Haines claimed again Wolf was an "equal opportunity offender," and Sunny Hostin repeated her joy from the CNN table: "I thought you were very funny! I thought you were hilarious! I called it brave, and people in the room were laughing as well."
