After the nauseating rounds of awards season in Hollywood, it’s nice to see someone who can call TinselTown what it is: truly awful.
Actor Terry Crews, in an interview with BuzzFeed, remarked to Alanna Bennett that “People don’t understand that Hollywood is a very violent place.” While detailing his legal battle with the agent who groped him at a party in 2016, Crews explained that exposing the movie industry for what it really is had its consequences: “You see a lot of people who never work again. For even speaking up the whole thing is that they cut off your head so that the next person doesn’t speak.”
But telling the truth about Hollywood, which has become the seat of the #resistance with its political grandstanding, is important for Crews, who compared the industry to a “slave plantation.” He said: “Once you get rid of shame, you get to step off the slave plantation. And I get to be free.”
Crews also seems to be grasping for a better definition for masculinity than the one Hollywood offers. Although BuzzFeed wrote that the actor has “a feud with toxic masculinity,” it seems like Crews has been trying to return to a more traditional form of masculinity. In the past, he spoke publicly about fighting his porn addiction, saying “You cannot accept any pornography in your life.”
And while Hollywood likes to lecture people about politics (and in particular President Trump,) Crews has steered clear of the same stale tirades. When clips from his movie Idiocracy began to be used as “anti-Trump ads,” Crews told Vanity Fair in 2017: “It killed the comedy...I’m not interested in being anti-anything. It didn’t really make sense to me, because I’ve never been that guy, anyway. I just wanted to be funny.”
