The every-more radical Newsweek’s blame-Trump-for-everything philosophy reached a nadir Monday afternoon, with the headline “Because of Trump, People Are Burning Israeli Flags and Attacking Jews.” Sadly, Jews have been attacked in Europe long before Donald Trump arrived on the political scene. A more accurate would read: “Because They Hate Jews, Radical Muslims Are Burning Israeli Flags and Attacking Jews.” Extremists hardly need Trump as an excuse to be hateful and violent, after all. But for the Trump-obsessed media, the man is the source of all evil.
Trump’s move isn't even that radical; it merely complies with a 1995 law passed by Congress (the Jerusalem Embassy Act) mandating that the U.S. relocate its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, Israel's genuine capital.
To be fair, the headline was worse than the actual piece by reporter Cristina Maza, which condemned the recent anti-Semitic outbursts in Europe:
At least a dozen people were charged for incidents related to anti-Semitism after hundreds gathered in Germany’s capital on Sunday and burned Israeli flags to protest President Donald Trump’s decision to declare Jerusalem the capital of Israel.
Still, Maza indulged in the Palestinian wishful thinking that they would have East Jerusalem as the capital of a Palestinian state:
Police brought charges against at least 12 people during Sunday’s protests, dubbed the Day of Rage, which took place outside the U.S. embassy in Berlin.
People were protesting Trump’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. Half of Jerusalem had been envisioned as the future capital of a Palestinian state, if a two-state solution were reached between Israel and Palestine. For many across the Middle East, Trump’s announcement on Wednesday put an end to any chance of a peace agreement by giving Israel what it wanted most without extracting any concessions.
Israel already had Jerusalem; America recognizing that reality was a welcome formality:
Three people were arrested in Sweden on Sunday for allegedly throwing firebombs at a synagogue in the city of Gothenburg. It was the second anti-Jewish attack in Sweden in just two days, and took place as people gathered to protest Trump’s Jerusalem announcement.
A December 6 story by Maza was also loaded with the headline, “Even Jewish Americans Think Trump’s Embassy in Jerusalem Decision Is a Bad Idea.” By "Jewish Americans," Newsweek apparently really meant liberal Jewish activist groups like Jewish Voice for Pace. The story also included critical tweets from those avatars of objectivity, socialist Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein (Calif.) (who actually, hypocritically, has voted to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital on multiple occasions):
Many Jewish groups from across the United States expressed serious concern and consternation at the news that President Donald Trump will move the U.S. embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
On Tuesday, Trump said that the decision to move the embassy would be made official on Wednesday. The announcement caused outcry from leaders across the Arab world, but also from progressive Jews and members of the Reform Jewish movement in the United States.
The opinion of conservative Jews was relegated to the next-to-last paragraph.
