At the Aspen Ideas Festival liberal journalists maintained their high level of panic over President Trump’s “war on the press.” Jeffrey Goldberg is editor of The Atlantic magazine, a man who made sure his magazine abandoned its traditions to endorse Hillary Clinton for president. Now that his candidate failed, he claimed Trump’s criticisms of the press are going to lead to violence against journalists “in a large way.”
The catalyst was Yahoo News anchor Katie Couric, who asked, “Jeff, when the president constantly tweets that different newspapers are examples of fake news, like the Washington Post or the New York Times, and you know, accuses reporters of being fake news at White House briefings or when he appears before reporters there, what’s your reaction?”
Goldberg, at the June 28 event, started by mocking it. “Well, part of my reaction is that we’re are all engaged in a reality TV show. That this is a reality TV version of a war between the president and the press,” Goldberg said. He claimed this helps them gain subscribers.
But then he claimed violence was on the way. “The problem is, and this is what I worry about more than anything else, is that there are people in the country who don’t understand that this a cynical reality TV game,” Goldberg concluded. “And are going to hear over and over again from the president that the reporters, journalists are enemies of the state, and someone God forbid, is going to do something violent against journalists in a large way, and then I know where the fault lies. And we’re heading in this direction, and it’s quite frightening.”
Goldberg is also the Obama superfan who claimed the last president was the "greatest terrorist hunter in the history of the American presidency" and also claimed he was "the most Jewish president we've ever had."
