Liberal HBO host John Oliver on Wednesday sneered that he won’t let the “viscerally horrifying” Donald Trump ruin the creativity of his show. Talking to USA Today about the upcoming season of Last Week Tonight, Oliver complained, “I always believed he was going to do what he said, which is why I was so against him becoming president. That doesn’t make it any less viscerally horrifying.”
He worried, “I think he’s going to try to put that stupid wall up, (and) I know there are lots of people who thought that wasn’t going to happen.” The host also bragged that he saw it all coming: “Any surprise at what he’s doing is not necessarily earned, because this was the only way this was heading.”

USA Today writer Gary Levin recounted, “The election was so all-consuming that late-night hosts have been forced to weigh in on politics even if they don't want to, he said, for fear of seeming irrelevant.” Oliver snidely insisted that the new season wouldn’t be swamped by Trump: “I'm very anxious to not make it all Trump all the time, just on the level of interest and what the human soul can sustain.”
The print headline underlined this claim that the President wouldn't ruin the show: "John Oliver won't let politics trump creativity."
Although the HBO host prides himself as being a comic who speaks truth to power, he mostly just produces typical left-wing screeds.
On October 30, 2015, the comic, originally from Britain, mocked America: “American democracy looks like a four-year-old’s birthday party.”
On October 18, 2015, he bashed Stephen Harper, then the Conservative Prime Minister of Canada, as an “evil” “Islamophobe.”
On November 2, 2015, Oliver promoted the Medicaid expansion as free money.
