According to Huffington Post, the Grand Old Party will become the Dead Old Party at the 2016 Republican convention in Cleveland. Cause of death? Support for presumptive nominee Donald Trump.
Taking plenty of shots at the GOP, historian Robert McElvaine penned the party’s obituary for Huffington Post claiming it will die in July of “Mad Don Disease,” for supporting Trump.
McElvaine pathologized Trump supporters in that June 17, piece, calling them “patients” who “usually have to be taken in straitjackets to psychiatric hospitals.”
He also accused the Republican Party of a history of racism, or “Racism Americanesis,” and said it was led “towards a religion that worships a God called The Market.”
In a jab at the GOP’s racial makeup, McElvaine snarked that the disease “Racism Americanesis,” was a “flesh-eating bacterium” that caused “noticeably paling” skin.
But that description wasn’t nearly as demeaning as McElvaine’s description of “Mad Don Disease,” which he used to paint Trump supporters as semi-rabid brutes.
“It is an affliction that attacks its host’s brain, leading the organism to engage in increasingly bizarre behavior, including but not limited to wild, uncontrollable outbursts of anger directed at anything and anyone,” McElvaine said of the “disease.”
He added that it entailed “susceptibility to the most outlandish sorts of conspiracy theories, the fabrication of more and more ludicrous lies … misogyny xenophobia, megalomania, and so on.”
McElvaine also attacked free market ideology and conservative donors in the obit.
He mentioned the Koch Brothers and billionaire Sheldon Adelson, calling them the GOP’s “wealthy uncles.” McElvaine also named one of the GOP’s paternal grandparents “Greed,” and one of its sons “Concentration of Wealth.”
McElvaine’s vitriol for Trump supporters fit in with The Huffington Post’s views. The website ends each of its articles about Trump with an editor’s note that reads:
“Editor’s note: Donald Trump regularly incites political violence and is a serial liar, rampant xenophobe, racist, misogynist and birther who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims — 1.6 billion members of an entire religion — from entering the U.S.”
