Watch as ABC Journalist Is Mistaken for a Hillary Supporter By ‘Bernie Bro’

April 20th, 2016 1:10 PM

Nightline reporter David Wright on Tuesday was mistaken for a Hillary Clinton supporter by an angry “Bernie bro.” Talking to New Yorkers in Washington Square Park, he was interrupted. Wright related, “We were chatting with one Sanders supporter... Then a Bernie bro barreled up, assuming I'm the enemy because I'm wearing a tie.”

The older individual in a Sanders t-shirt screamed, “Kids were killed for Hillary. She supported the Iraq war. She's supported by all the business firms on Wall Street.” The man continued yelling at Wright: “All you people are out here in a gentrified neighborhood, in a gentrified city. You know nothing about — you with your money —  did to people that founded this city.”

He then gave Wright the finger and walked away muttering. Perhaps the man just assumed most reporters at ABC are supportive of Hillary Clinton? Not an unreasonable conclusion.

A transcript of the exchange is below:

DAVID WRIGHT: This part of town is decidedly more Democratic. Over at Washington Square Park — [talking to a Sanders supporter] It sounds like you're especially excited about voting for Bernie. We were chatting with one Sanders supporter —

WOMAN: It's a vote for changed  political system.

WRIGHT: — then a Bernie bro barreled up assuming I'm the enemy because I'm wearing a tie.

MAN: Kids were killed for Hillary. She supported the Iraq war. She's supported by all the business firms on Wall Street.

WRIGHT: You sound very angry.

MAN: Oh, yeah. I am very angry. Absolutely. And I have a right to be. All you people are out here in a gentrified neighborhood, in a gentrified city. You know nothing about — you with your money did to people that founded this city.

WRIGHT: Do you agree with him?

WOMAN: We need a discussion, not a shouting match.
