Despite official statistics showing immigration from Mexico is down in recent years, Univision has found an apparent exception in the case of immigrants from the Mexican state of Puebla.
To mark the occasion, the network kicked off a new series in its morning show, Despierta América, which celebrates what is being touted as a third historic “wave” of Mexican immigrants into New York City.
ORLANDO SEGURA, UNIVISION: During the last 30 years three migrant waves of Pueblans to New York have existed. The first was in the 80’s, benefitting from the amnesty of Ronald Reagan. The second, during the economic boom of the presidency of Bill Clinton. The third, we are living through right now.
You won’t see this anywhere else. While most of the media is constantly pushing the narrative that illegal immigration is down and that the U.S. border is now harder to get through, here is Univision staging a fiesta for what’s being hailed as a historic new influx.
In the series, titled “Puebla York: Mexican Land” Univision’s Orlando Segura points out that immigrants from Puebla are actually the fastest growing Hispanic immigrant group in the Big Apple.
Segura turns to former Mexican Foreign Minister Jorge Castañeda as his subject expert. Castañeda explicitly points to the prospect of immigration reform and legalization as a likely driver of this latest immigration upswing.
JORGE CASTAÑEDA, FORMER FOREIGN MINISTER OF MEXICO: And maybe, maybe, the prospect of a so-called immigration reform with some element of legalization is also attracting some people that think that already being inside the United States in any way will make it easier to obtain some type of legal status, even if it is provisional.
Here you have what amounts to another inducement for still more illegal immigrants to head North and try their hand at circumventing the laws and policies in place for legal immigration, by getting a shortcut through a pathway to legalization that may come with comprehensive immigration reform.
Castañeda, of course, is an outspoken advocate of amnesty, including a pathway to citizenship. He’s also on record, in a 2010 interview with Democracy Now! as saying that more money and resources for border security and enforcement “doesn’t help.”
Chalk it all up as par for the course for Univision, with news coverage that is continually skewed towards practically open borders, legalization of all illegal immigrants, and not even subtle calls for more illegal immigration.
