It’s been a while (not really) since we’ve heard any crazy comments from our favorite ambulance chaser-turned-congressman from Florida, but now he’s going full-on birther mode when it comes to Sen. Ted Cruz’s presidential bid by calling Cruz “ineligible” because he was born in Canada to an American mother and a Cuban father.
Speaking on Alan Colmes’ radio show last week, Democratic Rep. Alan Grayson let us in on his nefarious plan:
I’m waiting for the moment that he gets the nomination, and then I will file that beautiful lawsuit saying that he’s unqualified for the job because he’s …Call me crazy but I think the President of America should be an American,” he added. Cruz is an American citizen.
[Don’t expect to see liberal media types like Chris Matthews lining up to blast Grayson’s loony birtherism.]
But of course Grayson then blasted those who took issue with Obama’s birth certificate by whining:
It’s interesting to me that the people who had a problem with Obama’s birth certificate don’t have a problem with Ted Cruz, who literally was born in another country and renounced his Canadian citizenry…
Grayson is doing exactly what he accused Republicans of doing to Obama when he ran for election – nevermind the fact it was actually operatives from the Clinton campaign who brought on the whole Obama birther hysteria in the 2008 primary – Grayson seems to forget that inconvenient truth.
Perhaps Grayson should do a little fact-checking – or have someone do it for him because he would see that there have been other candidates who were born outside the U.S. who have run for president – including John McCain (Panama Canal Zone) in 2008 and George Romney (Mexico) in 1968.
Cruz, a top-notch constitutional lawyer with a track record of success at the Supreme court, stated since he ran for presidency that his birth in Canada does not disqualify him from being president:
I was born in Calgary. My mother was an American citizen by birth,” Cruz said in February at the Conservative Political Action Conference. “Under federal law, that made me an American citizen by birth. The Constitution requires that you be a natural-born citizen.
