With both the Republican and Democratic conventions now concluded, it’s time to judge the news media on how fairly they covered the two parties. Media Research Center analysts looked at various aspects of coverage, all of which demonstrate that journalists obviously favored the Democratic gathering.

Despite it drawing nowhere near the same levels of enthusiasm that other speeches drew in the 2016 Democratic National Convention (DNC) thus far, the “big three” networks of ABC, CBS, and NBC went into full spin mode late Wednesday hailing vice presidential nominee Tim Kaine’s personality as a “suburban dad” whose “extraordinary” Spanish-speaking skills made for “a Spanish lesson down here.”

On Tuesday night, the major broadcast networks were quick to laud former President Bill Clinton’s speech at the Democratic National Convention (DNC) as “heartwarming” and “the most important speech of his life” featuring “vintage Bill” that was akin to him “telling a family story at bar or around the dinner table at a holiday.”  

The “big three” networks of ABC, CBS, and NBC were hard pressed for time on Monday night to comment on speeches at the Democratic National Convention (DNC) by Senators Elizabeth Warren (Mass.) and Bernie Sanders (Vt.), but there was time after First Lady Michelle Obama’s speech to gush over her “artfully painted” address featuring “trademark...grace” in attacking Donald Trump.

The depiction of Donald Trump’s speech by liberal reporters and commentator continued into the next morning with CBS’s Charlie Rose greeting viewers with this stark opening: “Welcome to CBS This Morning. Donald Trump accepts the Republican presidential nomination, saying there can be no prosperity without law and order. His speech focused more on threats than hope.” 

On Thursday, both ABC’s Good Morning America and CBS This Morning hailed a video released by left-wing website Mic.com featuring celebrities describing “23 Ways You Could be Killed if You are Black in America.” On GMA, Pop News anchor Sara Haines touted how singer Alicia Keys had “called on Hollywood's biggest names for a powerful rallying cry in response to police brutality.”  

In a surprisingly tough series of interviews on all three network morning shows on Wednesday, Bernie Sanders was grilled over his endorsement of Hillary Clinton. The hosts suggested he was simply supporting the “lesser of two evils” in the campaign and fretted that the socialist senator was “capitulating” his left-wing “values.”

It’s hard to tell if CBS is in or out when it comes to the legalization of marijuana. Tuesday's segment on CBS This Morning painted a pretty rosy picture of the California initiative to legalize recreational pot.
