Emerald City has only aired twice, and we’ve already seen demonic rituals and gruesome murders. This week, we’re introduced to a new topic: a character suffering an identity crisis, namely their gender.

In January, Shiloh Quine, a convicted killer serving a life sentence in California, was the first transgender inmate to ever receive a state-funded sex change surgery. Yet, based on media coverage of the operation, Americans would hardly know the issue was controversial.

The new Fox "comedy" The Mick is receiving some much-deserved outrage for its depravity and sexualization of children. The show revolves around foul-mouthed, irresponsible grifter Mackenzie “Mick” Murphy (Kaitlin Olson) who is forced to look after her intolerable niece and nephews after her rich sister goes to jail.

As we close out a year in which the news media worked overtime to earn the public’s contempt, spare a thought for their little siblings at the Sports Desk. Sports hacks are just as liberal, insular and arrogant as their “hard news” colleagues, and their desire to be taken seriously means they inject politics and ideology into issues where they just don’t belong.

Move over, transgenders. There’s a new kid in town. Huffington Post reported that Billions will make “TV history” for featuring the first gender non-conforming star in a mainstream show. Showtime, Billions host network, has a history of pushing boundaries with its leading characters. Season seven of Shameless included a major character who was transgender, played by a transgender actor. 

Fox’s newest music series Star (a spin-off of Empire) debuted Wednesday and the show is straight out of a liberal fantasyland. The title character, Star (Jude Demorest), is 17-years-old and ready to leave an abusive foster care home in search of her big break as a singer. Finding her younger sister, Simone (Brittany O’Grady), through her social worker, Star tracks her down and promptly murders…

Well this is a first.  In what is being touted as “Oscar history,” a gender-fluid actor could potentially be the first nominee in both male and female categories.  In addition to asking the question – what the heck is a “gender-fluid” actor? --  it also makes us wonder if that’s even fair – being eligible for both categories when everyone else is delineated to either a male or female category.
