A year of failure, suspension and demotion is all it takes to win a journalist of the year award——if you're Jemele Hill and you very publicly called the Republican president of the United States a "white supremacist." For this and other less-than-stellar "accomplishments" in 2017, Hill is the winner of the Journalist of the Year award in 2018 for the National Association of Black Journalists.

This week ESPN talk show host Bomani Jones had a conversation with GQ magazine interviewer Eve Ewing about America's struggle to reconcile a love of sports with its hatred for blacks. Ewing set the stage for the discussion by pointing out that "the sports arena is the place where America has been trained for centuries to fear and loathe the black body."

On Friday's Real Time show on HBO, liberal comedian Bill Maher and his guests made a number of incendiary comments about conservatives, including Maher joking that HIV is "what you (Donald Trump) get for sleeping with" Fox News host Sean Hannity.

CBS’s left-leaning The Good Fight surprisingly questioned the validity of the #MeToo movement and the Black Lives Matter movement in its latest episode. Sunday's episode, “Day 478,” referred to both movements as starting out with good causes, but eventually turning into mobs. The episode also accused President Trump’s tax cuts of being bad for the poor.

On Saturday's AM Joy, MSNBC terrorism analyst Malcolm Nance declared that veterans who "love Trump" are "not honorable" during a discussion of some of President Donald Trump's history of trashing Senator John McCain. And a bit earlier, the MSNBC analyst claimed that efforts to combat illegal immigration are a part of "institutionalized bigotry" and "racism" toward Latin Americans.

Between Thursday afternoon and Friday morning, the media have again shown they are more interested in news that portrays police officers as mistreating suspects than they are in updating viewers with information that counts in the cops' favor. Late last week, ABC, CBS and CNN gave attention to cell phone video in Miami which seemed to show a police officer kicking a car theft suspect in the head after he had surrendered. ABC’s Quantico returned just last week to bring us up-to-speed after a three-year time jump.
