Early Show, NYT Report What CBS Evening News Ignored: Own Poll Showing
August 5th, 2011 1:30 PM
While CBS's Early Show and the New York Times both highlighted their own poll showing support for further spending cuts, the CBS Evening News ignored it. Americans three-to-one believe the spending cuts in the debt ceiling deal were too small rather than too big, according to a CBS News/New York Times poll.
As NewsBusters reported, Thursday's CBS Evening News ignored the support for cuts…
Media Mash: Tea Party 'Terrorists' Edition
August 5th, 2011 11:07 AM
"During the Clinton years, there was great discipline in the Democratic ranks where they could all speak on-message. There continues to be the same great discipline in liberal ranks, but they've just torqued it up ten degrees now," NewsBusters publisher Brent Bozell told Fox News viewers on the August 4 "Hannity."
The Media Research Center founder made that argument after host Sean Hannity…
AP Item on Boehner's Carrot-Free, Stick-Free Persuasion Ignores
August 4th, 2011 9:45 PM
It seems that every time I see something possibly redeeming put forth by the Associated Press, they figure out a way to ruin it.
Take Larry Margasak's report this afternoon on John Boehner's attempts at persuading House Republican members to support his various attempts at debt-ceiling legislation during the few two weeks. (I've made my general unhappiness with the ultimate result pretty…
Tea Party 'Terrorists
August 4th, 2011 6:24 PM
According to the website Politico, Vice President Joe Biden agreed "with a line of argument made by Rep. Mike Doyle (D-Pa.) at a two-hour, closed-door Democratic Caucus meeting" that congressional tea party members "acted like terrorists" in the way they stood against attempts to raise taxes and force spending reductions as part of the debt-ceiling deal.
Biden denied making the comparison.…
Time Reporter Cheers Liberal Actor Damon for 'School[ing]' Libertarian
August 4th, 2011 6:11 PM
Time reporter Megan Gibson apparently considers liberal actor Matt Damon's testy tirade against Reason.tv reporter Michelle Fields as a veritable lecture on the economics of tenured teaching.
"Matt Damon showed his love for teachers — and after this confrontation, we're sure teachers are loving Matt Damon right back," Gibson enthused in an August 3 "Newsfeed" blog post entitled "Watch: Matt…
CNN Ignores Allegations Against Piers Morgan While CBS, MSNBC Report
August 4th, 2011 4:55 PM
For a second straight day CNN ignored the newest phone hacking accusations made against its 9 p.m. host Piers Morgan. Major media outlets, including Bloomberg News, msnbc.com, and CBS have reported the story, but Morgan's current employer, CNN, has remained mum on the allegations.
On Wednesday, the ex-wife of Paul McCartney accused a journalist from a British newspaper group of hacking her…
Name That Party: Comparing NYDN's and AP's Coverage of 'Louis the Lewd
August 4th, 2011 3:55 PM
Louis Magazzu, whom I shall nickname "Louis the Lewd," was a Democratic County Freeholder in Cumberland County, New Jersey. A "freeholder" is the Garden State equivalent of a county commissioner.
His position is in the past tense because Louis the Lewd resigned on Tuesday after nude pictures of himself sent to a woman with whom he had online correspondence for several years were published.…
NBC's Williams: 'Astounding' Food Stamp 'Numbers Would Come As a Huge
August 4th, 2011 2:57 PM
On Wednesday's NBC Nightly News, anchor Brian Williams reported on another development in the Great Obama Recovery:
"We saw some astounding new numbers that came out today. They showed the number of Americans relying on food stamps has hit another all-time record. These numbers would come as a huge disappointment to President Lyndon Johnson, who launched his War on Poverty back in 1964.…
AP Econ Writers Fret Over No 'Stimulus,' Govt. 'Cutting at All Levels
August 3rd, 2011 9:33 PM
If we're to believe Paul Wiseman and David K. Randall at the Associated Press in their Wednesday afternoon report on the economy, all of the alleged solutions which might shake the U.S. economy out of its weakness either aren't available or no one has the will to try them: stimulus, infrastructure projects, jobs programs, or another round of quantitative easing. Oh, and governments are damaging…
Reporting How Cubans May Finally Be Able to Own Their Houses, NY Times
August 3rd, 2011 5:58 PM
Leave it to the New York Times to worry about income disparity and gentrification… in Cuba.
In his August 3 story “Cubans Set for Big Change: Right to Buy Homes,” correspondent Damien Cave reported on how Cubans will finally be able – albeit doubtless with numerous restrictions – to own their own houses come legislative changes expected to be enacted later this year.
“[E]ven with some state…
CNN's Don Lemon Treated Dem Opponents of Debt Ceiling Bill With Kid Gl
August 3rd, 2011 5:32 PM
Both House Democrats and Republicans opposed the debt ceiling compromise, but CNN's Don Lemon gave softball interviews to three Democrat congressmen who voted against the bill, while scrutinizing Tea Party Congressman Joe Walsh (R-Ill.) for his opposition.
"Why the change of heart, Congressman?" the CNN host asked Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.) Tuesday on his decision to switch his vote to no.…
CNN Email Desperately Boosts Struggling Stock Market
August 3rd, 2011 3:12 PM
I don't normally get emails from CNN when the markets go from negative territory to positive, or vice-versa. But I did today, as the Dow and the S&P 500 oh-so-temporarily showed plus signs?
So why did CNN send the email? Could it be that the markets' plunge is getting more widely known, and the network feels the need to tamp down the spreading pessimism?
The CNN email, along with a…
AP Report on 'Disappointing' Car Sales Partially Blames Debt-Ceiling D
August 2nd, 2011 11:37 PM
Did you know that car buyers in July took "worries" over the debt-ceiling debate in Washington into account when they decided to buy -- or apparently decided not to buy?
Neither did I. But Dee-Ann Durbin and Tom Krisher rolled out that excuse this evening as one factor explaining why July's car sales were "disappointing," and then appeared to stuff those words into the mouth of the spokesman…
CNN's Don Lemon Asks If Obama Should Run As Conservative in
August 2nd, 2011 6:30 PM
Channeling liberal disenchantment with President Obama, CNN anchor Don Lemon wondered Monday if the President would be "better off running as a conservative" in the next election.
"Your colleague in New York Gary Ackerman said the Republicans invited the President, quote, 'to negotiate at a strip poker table, and he showed up half-naked,' and then liberal columnist Paul Krugman calls the deal…
