Republicans and conservatives dating back at least to Richard Nixon have used the slogan "tough on crime" and its corollary "lock 'em up and throw away the key" as electoral red meat. The problem is what to do when inmates are released with few skills, fewer job prospects and a bleak future that leads some to commit new crimes that land them in prison again at taxpayers' expense.

On Monday's New Day, CNN legal analyst Elie Honig, speaking of President Trump's tweet in which he referred to Michael Cohen as a "rat," Honig says: "people get killed because of that . . . People have been murdered because someone said, that guy's a rat." Honig tried to cover his tracks by adding, "I'm not saying the President is trying to get Michael Cohen injured." Sure. Saturday's Today show on NBC spent almost two minutes highlighting an obituary for a suicide victim in Vermont that is part of an effort to encourage new laws that would require a 24-hour waiting period before purchasing a gun to try to prevent suicides. The report made no time for any dissenting point of view and merely served as a promotion for the gun control proposal.

MSNBC host Joy Reid and guest Elie Mystal on Saturday openly connived about the best way to "get to" Trump. They concluded that it would be to "go after" Ivanka. Gloated Mystal: "this is the first time that we have Ivanka . . . in the crosshairs . . . The only way we're really going to get to Trump is if you go after his kids . . . And this [going after Ivanka] could be the way to do it."

On Morning Joe, Donny Deutsch describes President Trump as "pathetic" and "defanged," going from being a "malignant cancer" to a "benign cancer." And so it is for the cast of Morning Joe. No matter how they might have denounced President Trump the day before, as the sun rises they are forced to begin yet again their labor of trying to take Trump down. 

As if it was the most important news of all, Telemundo dedicated three slots of a recent edition of its national evening news - adding up to nine minutes - to promote an exclusive half-hour interview with Emma Coronel, the wife of Joaquín 'El Chapo' Guzmán, the leader of Mexico's Sinaloa Cartel who is currently on trial in a New York federal court.

To offer a different interpretation, reader WKRP took the view that McQuade was not suggesting that President Trump be stripped of his citizenship, but that he be removed from office if he obtained the presidency via fraud. On Wednesday's Late Night with Seth Meyers, aired early Thursday, NBC host Meyers provided far-left British journalist Mehdi Hasan an unchallenged forum to excoriate former President George H.W. Bush for the deaths of Iraqis and Panamanians, as well as the Willie Horton campaign issue and Bush's reaction to the AIDS epidemic.

Appearing as a guest on Wednesday's Amanpour and Company on PBS to discuss former President George H.W. Bush's legacy, The New Yorker editor David Remnick condemned Bush's use of convicted murderer Willie Horton in the 1988 presidential campaign as "racist." Host Christiane Amanpour also suggested that Bush had run a "racist" campaign ad.
