The liberal media denies the power of bias in algorithms when it comes to censorship of conservatives. But it fully embraces the idea of bias when it comes to gender inequality.
David Heinemeier Hansson, a Danish software developer, tweeted that Apple’s “black box algorithm” gave him 20 times the credit limit as his wife. “No appeals work,” he claimed. In addition, even though his wife paid off her limit in full, “the card won’t approve any spending until the next billing period.” His tweet thread, according to The New York Times, prompted New York state regulators to investigate Apple Card’s algorithm.
When Hansson’s wife tried to get an answer from Apple, the customer service representatives informed her that it was the “algorithm” that was causing the problem. Hansson tweeted, “Yet everyone we’ve talked to from both Apple and GS are SO SURE that THE ALGORITHM isn’t biased and discriminating in any way. That’s some grade-A management of cognitive dissonance.”
He went on to claim, “This is the soft undermining of people’s sense of self. The algorithm might discriminate out of biased historical training data, faulty but uncorrectable inputs, programming errors, or malicious intent. You’ll never be able to know.”
Apple’s co-founder, Steve Wozniak, tweeted, “The same thing happened to us. I got 10x the credit limit. We have no separate bank or credit card accounts or any separate assets. Hard to get to a human for a correction though. It's big tech in 2019.” He later added, “Who knows what the algorithm is.”
In the discussion surrounding the censorship of conservatives, the liberal media and Democrats have labelled the topic as a “conspiracy theory rather than verifiable fact.” Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-NY) called the censorship of conservatives a “right-wing conspiracy theory” at a hearing where Google CEO Sundar Pichai testified in front of Congress.
Dr. Robert Epstein, a research psychologist, said that algorithms “are programmed to put one thing ahead of another in a way that is highly secret and ever-changing.”
Meanwhile, The Washington Post, which asserts that censorship of conservatives online is a mere “criticisms,” has a different take when it comes to gender bias. The Post ran a piece from Bloomberg explaining, “How the Algorithms Running Your Life Are Biased.” It determined that “when data is misused, software can compound stereotypes or arrive at false conclusions.”
