DNC Complains Facebook Has Not Censored Trump, Conservatives Enough

Think Facebook is trigger-happy with censorship? Imagine how bad it would be if it caved to the left’s censorship demands!

The Democratic National Committee (DNC) slammed Facebook in a memo for “unkept promises” leading up to a meeting between the company’s top executives and leaders of an ad boycott. The Washington Post published a few highlights from the memo on July 7 that indicates how much the left sees social media censorship as a key strategy for silencing their opposition and censoring opinions they do not like. The DNC claimed in the memo that Facebook had “uniformly allowed President Trump to lie about methods of voting in the 2020 election, even though the lies violate the clear text of the policy.”

The memo’s writers were reportedly bewildered at how President Donald Trump’s concerns over voter fraud were allowed to remain on the platform. The Post also claimed the president’s concerns were “without evidence,” and quoted the DNC’s condemnation of Facebook for defending the president’s right to voice concern:

“Explaining these decisions over email to the DNC, Facebook went so far as to state that there were no authoritative sources that could disprove allegations of widespread ballot theft from mailboxes; and, therefore, that the post was appropriate.”

The Post also summarized that the memo “argues that Facebook’s underlying algorithms continue to create incentives for divisive and hateful content, a problem supercharged by policies that let users operate networks of pages to push sensationalistic material.” The Post noted how Facebook sees groups as being like “living rooms,” whereas the DNC sees them as “bastions of disinformation.”

Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg vowed in response to criticism campaigns from the left, “We are making changes — not for financial reasons or advertiser pressure, but because it is the right thing to do,” reported The Post.

Facebook spokesman Andy Stone responded to the memo by defending the company’s recent track record as the election approaches:

“Since 2016, Facebook has worked to secure our platforms from interference, tripled the number of people working on safety and security, and added political advertising transparency and controls, all while fighting misinformation with the help of an unmatched global network of over 70 fact-checking organizations including 10 in the U.S."

Facebook has been enduring multiple attacks from liberals over the past few weeks, including a boycott of over 1,000 companies for not being left-wing enough. As a result, Facebook has considered throwing up its hands in surrender and banning all election ads.  “Facebook Inc. is considering imposing a ban on political ads on its social network in the days leading up to the U.S. election in November, according to people familiar with the company’s thinking” Bloomberg reported July 10. Big Tech companies, like any other company, are subject to both financial and cultural pressure.
